Successful white marlin fishing requires skill and specific techniques. Anglers most often use trolling
methods, deploying a spread of artificial lures and baits like ballyhoo along with teasers and

dredges designed to lure these aggressive feeders to the surface. The use of outriggers allows for
more lines to be deployed away from the boat which helps “spread” lures to increase the chance

of a strike. Enticing white marlin to bite takes practice and finesse, but once hooked, the fight is
on, as these fish are known for their acrobatic leaps and intense battles.

Ocean City hosts several prestigious fishing tournaments throughout the season featuring white
marlin, including the Big Fish Classic, Heels N Reels, Poor Girls Open, Marlins for Mason and
The MidAtlantic. Ocean City is also home to the world-renowned White Marlin Open.

Held annually in August, it is the world’s largest billfish tournament, drawing hundreds of boats
and offering millions in prize money. These events not only showcase the thrill of white marlin
fishing, but also bring together a vibrant community of anglers, enthusiasts and spectators.

Organizers produce entertaining events with music, announcers and live-streaming that make for
a very enjoyable experience. Participants work together with tournament directors to promote
