16 November Yellowfins

16 November Yellowfins

As we continue to move into the fall the opportunity to go fishing in the ocean becomes more and more rare.  We usually have less days in a week that are fishable than are non-fishable, and when we can get it out in the ocean you can count on it being pretty cold.  That being said, when there is a good shot of water close enough to make a run to, you bust out the bibs and sweatshirts and fire up the engines.

Well today was one of the few fishable days that we’ve had this week, and the last we’ll have for a week or so, but some boats took advantage of it and were handsomely rewarded.  The Wrecker with Captain Jeremy Blunt left the slip before sunrise this morning and was back at the dock after sunrise this afternoon (it was 5:15PM), but he put his crew on one hell of a day of offshore trolling.  Captain Jeremy fished the north end of the Poor Man’s Canyon in 66 degree water and put 16 35# class yellowfin tuna in the boat.   The first bite was just 20 minutes after lines in and except for a short try for a swordfish, it was steady action all day.  Looks like there is still time to put some meat in the freezer!

I got a cool story with this photo from our friends over at the HUK Big Fish Classic as they Facebook reported this nice swordfish from the crew of the Mrs. L2. Tom Patania, Matt Reilly, Josh Totoro, and Dave Nardiello caught this swordfish on their very first swordfish trip, on their very first swordfish drop.  Pretty work fellas!

The local party boat fleet has to choose their weather windows wisely this time of year as well so today was a good day to do some bottom bouncing aboard the Angler with Captain Chris Mizurak.  Captain Chris reported good fishing with a mixed bag of bluefish, sea bass and some nice flounder to as big as 5 pounds.

Blake Gunther of the Ocean City Fishing Community was able to get on some tautog today with Matt Ellis with some nice fish going in the cooler.  Remember MD tautog season is OPEN for this December so be sure to take advantage of what can be some pretty good fishing when not much else is going on.

There are also some tautog being caught in the bay as the water temperatures cool.  Bob Haltmeir reports that there are some fish being caught off of the Oceanic Pier in downtown Ocean City with some keepers mixed in.

Also back in the bay, Big Bird Cropper fished with his buddy Shane and released “all the rockfish you wanted” at the route 50 bridge on his Roy Rigs.  Bird also caught a nice flounder on the Roy Rig.
