200+ Pound Bigeye and A Bunch of Flounder

It was a little foggy and a little dreary today, but with no wind it was a good day to be on the water chasing some fish.  Kristen and I had our first satellite registration for the Flounder Royale Flounder Tournament at Atlantic Tackle and we had a great turnout.  We are now going to guarantee at least $5,000 for first place flounder and we’re just getting started!

Anglers Robert Smack and Adam Messer were fishing with Capt Brian Smack, mate James Smack and Brad and Brody Friedman just inside the Poorman’s Canyon today when they were surprised by this big bigeye tuna.  The big fish weighed in at 214 pounds on the scale at the Ocean City Fishing Center.

Captain Mark Hoos and the crew of the Marli had a nice day in the canyons with a bluefin tuna and a lineup of tilefish for the fish cleaners at Sunset Marina.

Congratulations to Brian Reynolds and Sean Hitchens for their first and second place finishes in the Blues for D.U. Tournament at Bahia Marina.  The duo won a total of $4,962 for their efforts.

I saw Brady Snyder and crew at Atlantic Tackle this afternoon and they had just watched the new YouTube video and were looking for some advice on where to flounder fish.  I sent them to the Thorofare with a few pointers and they messaged me this afternoon with their pics of success.  The guys used Deadly Doubles baited with just minnows and caught several throwback fish including a 16.5″ and one keeper at 18.5″.

Bryan Sentz jumped off of our fishing trip aboard the Angler yesterday and went right to the route 50 bridge to fish at night where he caught this nice rockfish.

Matt Brown was fishing ocean structure and landed this very nice 25″ flounder.

Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break had some fun this afternoon putting his anglers on some bluefish action.  They also caught a flounder trying to turn brown on both sides.

Captain Kane Bounds and the crews fishing on Fish Bound have been having awesome trips lately with limits of tilefish and flounder with some stud sea bass in the mix.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star had sportier seas than expected, but it was plenty fishable and fish hit the deck.

Sea Bass and a Do What?!? 6/8/24
Saw something I didn’t expect driving to the marina this morning – trees swaying & flags nearly starched tight..
Oh man..
What now weatherman?
NWS (national weather service) was calling for NW at 5 to 10 knots. That’s as pretty a day as we might ask.
Windfinder said no, a N then NE then ENE wind at 10 with rain midday.
Wind finder had their directions pretty close at least. NWS got an F- for sure.
Despite light forecasts, winds were almost nautical on our way off; closer to 15 I expect. Had there been anotjer 5 knots on top of it we’d have had a sit-down breakfast at Sorianos I reckon.
Holly, Julie & Yuliya stepped up for our block drop at Al Berger’s Reef today. Went over as pretty as you’d have – we kept going.
And going.
At lines in there was wind ..but no current. Most sea bass were of no mood for feeding. Thank goodness it wasn’t all of em.
Then, Oh Joy, a fog rolled in tight–just a whole lot of unforecast Yay. (Never did rain – knock wood.)
By & by the bite improved precisely in time with an increase in current. Holly was boxing them up; Ken, Hawk’s friend, Capt Mike & Julie too if at their own pace.
Yuliya finally got cooking when I found the right rod for her. A softer, lighter tip made all the difference. She’s so careful with her hands. Sakes, why you’d think she was a concert pianist or something.
Oh..
Wait.
She is!
Have listened to her CDs 15 years or more; finally had a chance to see her last October with the Prince George’s Philharmonic.. Was an amazing concert; she also holds private concerts in her “Green Room” at home. One day high winds will allow Shelly & I to go.. (See Yuliya Gorenman on YouTube etc – wonderful!)
By 11 Ms Holly was leading the pack with double digits. Hawk had a dandy in the box that would win the pool. Ken was jigging somewhat productively.
And then it slowed up.
Capt Mike crossed into DDs at 2, Julie soon after.. She’d put a smack-down on everyone her last trip out. Not that it matters but I think Holly edged her out by a bit this trip.
So long as my anglers aren’t done with their day until the dishes are washed?
Success!
Have a longer trip tomorrow. Six to four advertised – 5:30 to whenever I get in more likely! Crazy light rail (that, holy guacamole!, filled in pretty good – some spots open though!) .. Going! Maybe I’ll get to fish too? (unlikely now!)(See Fish Report morningstarfishing.com if you’d like to book a spot.)
Tuesday we’re laying in. Looks pretty stormy. Need to give my engines some luv anyhow. Sleeping in a bit wouldn’t hurt my feelings either!
Oyyy.. A journalist would call this ‘burying the lead.’ Derned if Julie didn’t catch a blueline tile today. Poor fellow was at least 30 miles from home! They’re generally caught in 300/400 feet of water.
Promise this – they are a wonderfully tasty fish!
Cheers All
Monty

Found a couple of keepers before the size limit increase last week….Check it out in the new YouTube!!
