30 Mahi, A 70 Pound Sword and a 170 Pound Bigeye

30 Mahi, A 70 Pound Sword and a 170 Pound Bigeye

It was another beautiful day in Ocean City….really beautiful for November!  Sunny skies, light winds and very unseasonably warm temperatures had anglers out in full force today taking advantage of the Indian Summer conditions and the great fishing.  And last night was a beautiful night to be out on an overnight trip to the deep.

I reported last night that Captain Austin Ensor and the #gang were fishing an overnighter on board the Primary Search last night and I looked forward to hearing from them today.  I thought the guys might have some luck…..but WHOA!!  Captain Austin reported an absolutely awesome trip upon return today.  The crew caught 30 or so mahi on the trip, they were one for three daytime swordfish bites today with that fish being released, they lost a “stud” swordfish today, jumped off a 100+ pound mako last night, boxed a 70 pound swordfish last night and also boxed a big 170 pound bigeye.  That is an insane overnight fishing trip any time of they year, much less in November.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of fishing with the kids from the Berlin Intermediate School Fishing Academy on board the Morning Star with Captain Monty Hawkins.  The trip came together when Captain Monty donated the boat for an auction to benefit the Ocean City Reef Foundation.  MSSA member Paul Fohner purchased the trip and donated it to the BIS Fishing Academy so that we could take the kids out, show them a good time and film an upcoming episode of Hooked on OC.  Captain Monty and mate Dan Iacangelo put the kids on some great fishing and even put some nice sea bass and triggerfish in the box.  Special thanks to Finn McCabe from the Atlantic Coast Chapter of MSSA for helping out in the cockpit and to Diana Jolley for running the fishing academy and putting the whole thing together.  Thanks to Dave Messick of Hooked on OC for the awesome shots!

Captain Chris Mizurak had the Angler out for a 10 hour trip today and reported good fishing and even better weather.  Captain Chris treated his anglers to beautiful conditions and good fishing with sea bass up to 4.5 pounds and flounder up to 5 pounds.

I couldn’t miss out on what will probably be the last really warm day of the year today so I jumped in the Fish in OC Carolina Skiff with Dave Messick and we shot a quick episode of Hooked on OC.  I decided to do some flounder fishing at the route 50 bridge and I had some pretty good luck.  After cast netting some peanut bunker I lucked into three throwback flounder and this nice 19″ keeper drifting north of the route 50 bridge in the “fishbowl”.
