Man it’s been over a week since I posted a Daily Angle!! I’ve been pretty busy putting the 2018 edition of Fish in OC magazine together, I moved and the biggest reason of all…..the weather has sucked and no one has really been fishing.
Mother Nature decided it was time for winter to start last week and temperatures dropped considerably and the wind blew along with it. Bay water temps have dropped significantly and being that MD tautog season is closed nobody has really been fishing the bay all that much. There are still some small rockfish around, but with the tough conditions lately fishing interest has been low this week.
The 5th Annual Ocean City Marlin Club Rockfish Tournament actually started on Saturday this week, but the weather was so crappy that none of the 13 boats registered in this year’s event were able to find any fish for the scale. That all changed today as the wind cooperated and allowed the boats to get out of the inlet and try their luck trolling for the elusive striped bass. It started off pretty cold this morning (and looks to be colder mid-week), but the wind was light and a couple of the boats were able to find some nice fish. Here’s what hit the scale today.
The crew of Hellbent put three nice fish on the leaderboard this afternoon with weights of 16, 31.2 and 32.3 pounds and is currently in 2nd place with their largest.
The crew of NonTypical also put some fish on the leaderboard this afternoon. Two of NonTypical’s fish weighed 18.8 and 20.4 pounds and were nice enough, but their largest fish was a bruiser. It was only 1/4″ longer than Hellbent’s biggest fish, but it was 4 1/2 pounds heavier at 36.8 pounds and currently holds first place in the tournament.
This is a fish five of nine day tournament with the final day this coming Sunday, December 17. I’ll keep you posted as guys catch fish and the leaderboard possibly changes. Good luck to anyone fishing the rest of the week!
