White Marlin and Sea Bass….On the Same Trip!

White Marlin and Sea Bass….On the Same Trip!

The marlin fishing offshore in the canyons is picking up just in time for next week’s White Marlin Open, the largest billfish tournament on planet Earth.  It’s not rare to catch white marlin.  It’s also not rare to catch sea bass.  When the same boat catches white marlin AND sea bass in the same trip, I’m confident saying that it’s not common.

The Boss Hogg out of Sunset Marina did just that today.  The “Hogg” crew has gotten so good at deep dropping out there in the canyons that it is not at all rare for them to come back with white marlin releases, tuna and mahi from the troll, and tilefish and sea bass from deep dropping.  Today they did it once again with three white marlin releases, 20 tilefish and 11 sea bass.  That is taking advantage of a day out on the water!

Captain Joe Drosey on board Rhonda’s Osprey also out of Sunset Marina has been having some great luck on the troll as of late.  Captain Joe put this happy crew on a nice yellowfin, two white marlin releases and a couple of mahi.

The party boat Judith M out of Bahia Marina has had some luck with sea bass and flounder lately on inshore structure.  Here is a catch of some keeper flounder from one of today’s 1/2 day trips.

A great submission from Captain Monty Hawkins on board the Morning Star out of The Ocean City Fishing Center this evening.  The flounder bit under dark clouds.. Here Vinny Artrip of OCMD shows off his 5.5 (est) pounder that won today’s pool.

I’ll end today with a photo that I just couldn’t keep out of the report.  The Moore Bills, with Captain Rob Skillman and mate Steve Moore, lived up to it’s name this weekend releasing 16 white marlin while fishing the Big Fish Classic.
