Bluefins in the Ocean & An Epic Day on the Bay

Bluefins in the Ocean & An Epic Day on the Bay

We had a beautiful November day today with sunny skies, light winds and warm temps.  It was a great day to blow off work and go fishing…..so I did.

I hit the bay today with my very good friend Big Bird Cropper today and we had one of the better trips that we’ve ever had.  We started at the “sandbar” where my very first bite was a keeper rockfish at 28.5″ that ate a 1/2 oz Thing A Ma Jig, then we caught a couple puppy red drum before heading over to the Route 50 bridge.  We caught some more rockfish and some bluefish in the shallows of the bridge and then moved over to the deep where we dredged up a very nice bluefish, another keeper rockfish and a rockfish of 33.5″ that Big Bird caught and released.  We finished up with some more throwback rockfish for an awesome day on the water.  I had the GoPro along with me so I’m sure it will make a great YouTube vid and an episode of Hooked on OC in the coming weeks.

While we were fishing the inlet we saw Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break Charters fishing the rocks of the jetty where he had a good time putting this angler on some nice keeper tautog.

Captain Jason also mentioned that there are a lot of 12″ to 15″ black drum being caught on the jetty so I thought I’d make sure everyone knows the limits and the difference between black drum and sheepshead.  Sheepshead – Teeth – One long dorsal fin – No chin barbels.   Size limit: 12″ Creel Limit: 4 per person per day.   Season: Year Round

Black Drum – No teeth – Two separated dorsal fins – chin barbels.  Size Limit:  16″  Creel Limit:  One per person per day.  Max Boat Limit:  6 Total   Season:  Year Round

Shaun Flaherty was fishing the Route 50 bridge today where he landed a big bluefish and a keeper rockfish.

Captain Dale Lisi of Foolish Pleasures has been having some serious luck with the bluefin tuna lately and today was no different.  Captain Dale put his anglers on two bluefin for the fishbox of 72 and 168 pounds.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star found the ocean a little less welcoming than expected this morning, but by afternoon it had calmed down nicely and there were plenty of fish in coolers.

Rarely have I been so disappointed in a forecast. I’d bragged about the coming calm to clients, even invited my gal, Shelly, aboard owing such a gorgeous forecast of light westerlies ..and that forecast couldn’t have been more wrong.
On clearing the inlet we soon found ourselves with 15+ knots of NNE wind building a nasty, steep chop.
Man!
NOAA’s forecast had called it right, but windfinder had held strong on a calm for nearly a week.
Suddenly checking all my weather sites, each held winds to fall out to near nothing come early afternoon – and, thankfully, it did.
Shelly and George (the giant fluke slayer!) gave our blocks a shove atop Capt. Bobby’s Memorial Reef; we held course east.
Joe & Jeff, very much amped from yesterday’s tuna, ran lines astern with high hopes. We saw life! Birds, huge schools of bait (likely bay anchovies) and occasionally good bluefin busting nearby.
Then?
Fish On!
..but the line wasn’t kept tight. I should have bumped the throttles up a tad more. The tuna turned toward the boat and freed itself.
That’s pretty much how the day went too until 1:30 or so.
Though sea bass were in absolutely no mood to bite, eels, dogfish and skates were putting on a show.
Sakes..
All my years – when skates, dogfish and eels are chewing? Nothing else will!
It was afternoon before anything much happened with the bite. When at last we had a bit of current and calm seas?
Game on.
Well, sort of.
Jigmaster Tom alone worked into double digits. Some will have to lean heavy on the potatoes to make dinner with their catch.
We again only boated one fluke – Gerald Meadows took the pool with it.
And while they were biting? Not one skate, dog or eel!
The bite was so late in the day I didn’t get in til six. An 11.5 hour day
Laying in a while. Sure hope the bite comes my favor when the next set of fishable days rolls around..
Cheers,
Monty

Check out this trip with Bird from a couple weeks ago!!
