I ventured down to Assateague Island for a solo surf fishing trip this afternoon and I enjoyed the scenery, I enjoyed the weather and I enjoyed catching the biggest striper that I’ve ever caught in my life. I used a pretty simple hi-lo rig with circle hooks baited with live sand fleas and Fishbites easy clam and fished the very first part of the outgoing tide. I had gone to the truck for a second when I spun around to see my 10′ spinning combo doubled over the water with drag peeling off real fast. I jumped to the rod, fought the fish for 5 or so minutes and was absolutely thrilled when this 48″ striper washed up in the Assateague suds. Huge thanks to Jerry Bauman, who happened to be driving by, for stopping and taking the pics!! Many thanks to surf legend David Moore, Wes Pollitt and OCPD Mike Dzurnak for the tips and advice over the past couple of weeks! I haven’t done much surf fishing down here until recently, but after a personal best like this I’m definitely hooked!

On my way down to Assateague Island I got a text from Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break Charters who was just back from an awesome day of fishing OC’s back bays. Captain Jason put his group on a keeper tautog, a couple of bluefish and several keeper flounder that included the biggest I’ve seen so far this year at 6.5 pounds.

“Nature Boy” Shawn Flaherty had a great afternoon over on Assateague casting Roy Rigs in the OC Inlet. Shawn had several rockfish caught and released including this nice 35″ fish.
Captain Dave Caffrey of On the Run Charters put his group on five nice keeper tautog this afternoon.
