A Limit of Tautog to 15 Pounds and A January Limit of Flounder to 26″

A Limit of Tautog to 15 Pounds and A January Limit of Flounder to 26″

We had some absolutely beautiful weather today with sunny skies, warm temperatures and absolutely flat calm seas.  It certainly started off a little chilly, but it was a great day to be on the ocean and well worth the ride!

I had the opportunity to head out to the ocean for some bottom fishing with my good buddy Mike Johnston and my new buddy Slater White to do some tautog fishing for a new episode of Hooked on OC and we had an awesome time.  It was one of the best days of bottom fishing that I’ve ever had with awesome weather, great company and absolutely insane fishing.  We fished 130 feet of water out of Ocean City inlet and the day started with some very good tautog fishing.  We used a combination of green crabs and white leggers on Deadly Tackle tog/bottom jigs and had a limit of fish.  I beat my personal best tautog ever on my first fish with a beautiful 25″, 10 pound, 12 ounce female that went in the box and just a short while later I would beat that personal best with a really big female.  A whole green crab on a 3 oz orange Deadly Tackle jig tricked my new personal best tautog into the net after a tug of war.  After a quick measure and weigh I released the 30 1/8″, 15 pound, 12 ounce girl and she swam fast to the bottom to live another day and propagate the species.

The tautog fishing with the personal best was awesome, and what happened next allowed us to do an entire second episode of Hooked on OC!  Slater decided to throw a bucktail with teaser rig baited with some Gulp down to see if he could get a flounder bite and on cast number three he came tight with a very nice 22″ fish.  Two casts later he hooked into another keeper and with that Mike and I decided to join him for some flounder fishing.  We began drifting and just a couple of hours later we had a limit of flounder up to 26″ and just under 6 pounds.  It was awesome and should make for two really good episodes of the show!

Morgan Mericle fished the Chesapeake Bay the other day where he caught and released several migratory striped bass up to a very nice 47″ on lures.
