And Some Big Red Drum

And Some Big Red Drum

We’ve got a little bit of a puff out of the northeast coming for the weekend, but it shouldn’t mess things up for too long.  Today it was absolutely beautiful out there and there was some good fishing across the board.

Captain Shawn Gibson of the Wound Tight was the first to text me this morning with some photos of some very big fish.  Captain Shawn had his anglers out for a day of ocean bottom fishing for sea bass and flounder, and was pleasantly surprised by some lager visitors.  Wound Tight caught the flounder and sea bass they were looking for, but also released a couple of very big red drum for a great day on the ocean.

Offshore fishing was good for most today too with marlin, mahi and tilefish.  Captain Chris Watkowski and mate Ben Harding of the Spring Mix II had a good day with two white marlin releases and a nice pile of mahi.

Captain Dale Lisi of Foolish Pleasures had a good day below the Washington canyon with a white marlin release and a pile of mahi and tilefish.

Capitan Nick Sampson of Mobsquad Fishing had a good day in the ocean as well while tagging some mahi and boxing some others.

Dave Carey, Tom Rohe and Tommy G. had a good day on board Saltwater Adventures with an awesome catch of flounder, sea bass and triggerfish.

Anglers fishing with Captain Jason Mumford and Lucky Break had a good day in the back bay with flounder, sheepshead and a bonus grey trout.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star will be taking a few days off with the wind so it was nice to have a boat limit today.

A fisherman’s kind of day this. Light westerlies with precious little ground swell remaining; calm, yet an ocean lively enough to give hope for some fine angling. Made way to the Terry Hull Memorial Reef where I’ve begun to tie three tanks/apcs together. (A reef built during the Army’s ‘Operation Reef Ex’ in 1994 where Vietnam era and older tanks and armored personel carriers were deployed as reef from NY to TX.. Oh, and Army? Feel free to do it again!) There Aaron and Amberly deployed 20 reef blocks and a pyramid right on the money before pressing on. Only the second drop, it’ll take a while to make progress; lot of ‘connecting’ to do.
Fishing began in fine style with Bob & Holly leading the charge to double digits before we’d even fished an hour. Soon after Bob was first to limit with our favorite lady angler next.
Aaron and Amberly made good use of their reef builder’s karma and limited early on also.
By 12:30 the whole boat was bagged out with Greg, fishing the bow, taking the pool.
Nice fishing.
Over the next few days Mother Nature is giving local sea bass yet another break via NE wind ..and us a chance to prep OCRF’s Navy boat in Cambridge on Saturday, plus do more maint on the MS.
In yesterday’s post I’d commented how calm Sept used to be – but no more. One of the fellows at Wallops, Kyle, remembered his Dad saying same. He asked the weather guys (pretty important staff when launching rockets every couple weeks!) to run a graph.
My memories were correct. Graphs at end of post..
Luvs me a boat limit!
Cheers!
Monty
