Battle For The Buckle Results and Some Nice Flounder

The 2nd Annual Battle for the Buckle Tournament is in the books tonight and it was a great event all things considered.  A total of 21 boats competed for over $75,000 in prize money and thankfully there were some nice fish caught to hit the leaderboard.  Here’s who won what from Tournament Director Kurt Howell.

All In     $3,879

30 Deep     $9,189

All Bodes Well     $9,684

Talkin’ Trash     Stringer Buckle Winner – $21,969

Relentless     Heaviest Fish Buckle Winner – $31,329

Captain Chase Eberle of Chasin’ Tides Charters did some deep dropping today and it paid off for his crew landing some blueline and golden tilefish for the cooler.

Captain Kane Bounds and his crews on Fish Bound have been having success with the black sea bass lately.  Anglers on Fish Bound have also started to see some more nice flounder showing up on recent trips with Captain Kevin Twilley landing a 7 pound doormat yesterday.

Anglers fishing on board Double Trouble with Captain DJ Churchill have had some great luck with sea bass this week with some nice fish to over 3 pounds coming by the rail.

Captain Chris Mizurak of the Angler reported a decent bite today with sea bass up to about 4 pounds with a few flounder.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star reported tough sledding for some of today’s trip, but folks still went home with some dinner.

Boy, what a test today was. Got underway with a super light rail – thought it would be cake. . .
Sandra sent four pyramids by the rail atop Kathy’s Reef. About done with adding to that one I think – pending video.
We set up nearby, me wanting to test the reef in general.
Oyyyy…
And another.
Oh Man.
Off to a third spot?
No different.
Fourth time was a charm. (but it should have been the first! That prompted an all day letter writing.. Someday maybe NOAA will have at it. It’s sooo easy to make sea bass abundant.)
Baldy took everyone’s pool money – was among 3 folks with 9 cbass too.
Just as we got underway for home a pair of fin whales spouted right off the bow. A large pod of saddlebacks were in with them. Already crazy late – we stayed a bit longer for the NatGeo show.
Tomorrow has t-storms in the forecast I guess. Clients have canceled it with an abject absence of participation.
Have work to do anyway.
We’ll see what Tuesday brings!
Cheers,
Monty
Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break Charters found this father and son a nice bluefish in the OC Inlet today.
Dave Rideout caught this big 34″ bluefish at the route 50 bridge today fishing with Frank Miller on his private boat Maiden Voyage.
