The first Mako of the Ocean City fishing season was caught yesterday by Andy Smelter on board Captain Terry Layton’s ‘Non-Typical’ out of Ocean City. There has been a piece of water in the Baltimore canyon that has looked very appealing over the last few weeks and Captain Terry, along with Jimmy Hughes (current MD State record holder for the Mako), Kevin McCabe, Dave Pederson and angler Andy Smelter, ventured out yesterday to give it a shot.
They caught the Mako in 65 degree water in 200 fathoms in the Baltimore canyon and report water as warm as 72 degrees and lots of life out there. They had one other mystery bite.
The Mako was estimated at 100 pounds and was caught on a trolled horse ballyhoo.
Congratulations to angler Andy Smelter, Captain Terry and the rest of the crew of the ‘Non-Typical’!!
