Fishable? Yes – But A Bit Saucy

It was sunny and unseasonably warm today and the wind blew a little harder than expected making the ocean a little saucy for those that got out fishing on her.  The back bay wasn’t impacted quite so much so there was some decent fishing around the East Channel and Route 50 bridge. The warm temperatures break tomorrow with some wind and a chance of rain, and then highs this weekend only reach into the 50s.  That should get the stripers going inshore for sure.

Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break Charters had a nice day of drifting today and put two nice keeper flounder on ice for his clients.

The Tortuga, fishing out of Bahia Marina had a good day of flounder fishing today as well with two keepers going on ice.

Anglers fishing with Captain Monty Hawkins on the Morning Star had to deal with saucy conditions today, but there were some nice sea bass and some triggerfish caught

Yet another fine sunrise greeted us as we headed east this morning. Some forecasts had the morning a bit too saucy at 20+, others said it would be fine at 10-15.
Was A-OK if a bit of heave building 15+ miles off owing overnight southerlies.
Weatherman also said it would pipe down to near-about flat calm by 9 or 10 am.
He lied.
Not terrible – but it blew nearly 15 knots well into lunch time. Locked in at about 210 degrees, it was enough breeze to sustain yesterday evening’s swell.
Fishable? Yes.
But a bit saucy.
Had two MD fish counters aboard today. Constantine and Sam. They did the deed on today’s block drop, then measured fish the rest of the day.
Their data set (MD ForHire Survey data) begins in 2004 when Congressman Gilchrest had NOAA repair the For Hire estimates. It’s the best data going for sea bass. Would be better still if they sexed their sea bass in summer, but still tops.
Thinking about their quite useful data triggered the fisheries data rant below.
For today?
Man, I thought our day was toast. I doubt I’ve ever mentioned where I fished before, but this tale needs to be known.
My first stop was a big CG cutter Senator Mikulski arranged for the CG and MD put down for us in 2001 or so. OCRF was quite new and had zero funding. Today I would think it would cost close to a million bucks to clean and deploy.
The bite was awful.
My next spot was one built off my transom. Fifteen hundred blocks and 25 pyramids..
Suddenly the day had potential! Still hit a bunch more spots but those blocks were incredibly better.
Though Jeff had crossed into double digits a bit before; my long time friend and angler, Ralph, at the rough and tumble seafaring age of 93, had numbers 10 & 11 when he landed a double at 12:40. Jeff did limit first at 1:36 – but that after Ralph had had enough of today’s ‘gentle calm’ forecast (no it wasn’t!) and sat the rest of the day out.
About half my guys were in double digits – Sean & Will did a good job of filleting them on the way in too.
Going to lose tomorrow to a brief NE wind – Might get Friday – and then it is supposed to really honk on Saturday..
Sheesh.
Between weather and fuel it’s getting hard to make a living!
