Flounder Fishing is Good Right Now

Flounder Fishing is Good Right Now

We had a really nice weather day in Ocean City today with sunny skies and nice warm temperatures.  There was a little breeze which made my drift a pain in the butt, but as good as the flounder fishing is it was worth the effort.  We are currently experiencing some really clean water conditions in the back bay on the high tide and there are a bunch of flounder around.  There are also flounder hanging on our inshore wrecks and reefs so the ocean going party boats are having good days with the flat fish as well.  Back in the bay you will catch fish on the old standard baits of Gulp, live minnows and shiners, but we’ve reached the time of year when you’ll have better luck with keeper fish if you can get ahold of larger baits like bunker, spot or mullet.  Some of the local tackle shops will have live spot available, but you’ll have to catch your own bunker or mullet.  A 4′ cast net and some time in the shallows around marshy areas will be worth the effort if you can find some live bunker or mullet as larger fish will be more likely to try these larger baits.

The largest flounder I’ve seen in a while came in today from Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break Charters.  Captain Jason put Stacy Denson from Abingdon, MD on this beautiful 25″ flounder that ate a live bait in the east channel.

Out in the ocean Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star “stumbled into a school of flounder today.”  Thomas, Frank, Frank, & Lovis Giovanna of NY – Rich Franks of NY – Jack Sigmon of Glen Burnie MD – Michael Peroro of NY with today’s pool winner, 20 inch fluke – & Madeline Connelly of Oxford show some of the nice fish that were caught aboard Morning Star today.

Captain Chris Mizurak of the Angler reported a little slower bite today, but he did have some quality flounder and sea bass come over the rail as well.

Chris Brackens from West Ocean City displays three nice keepers caught aboard the Less Bills today.  The guys found some nice live bunker that produced nothing but keepers after catching all shorts on Gulp and live minnows.

Captain Marc Spagnola of Dusk to Dawn Bowfishing had the Rut and River Pursuits guys out today for some shooting.  The guys had a great time putting some southern rays in the boat.

I couldn’t resist the flounder bite and the nice weather today so I put the house painting supplies aside and told the wife I had some product research to do.  The product was live bunker and the research turned out just right when I weeded through about 20 throwbacks to get these two nice fish of 18″ and 22″.
