The fog finally gave it a rest today and the sun was shining beautifully for most of the day. It was quite warm and there wasn’t much breeze to speak of so anglers were out in abundance taking advantage of the nice conditions.
Today was day 1 of the 22nd Annual Mako Mania Shark Tournament at Bahia Marina. 37 total boats are fishing this year’s event which is down from last year, but still a respectable number and thanks to the added entry levels for release there is still over $60,000 worth of prize money. Sunday’s weather forecast is not good at all so almost every boat fished today and most everyone will fish again tomorrow. There was some decent shark fishing today, but not a lot of makos were released, and thanks to the 83″ minimum size only one fish hit the deck at Bahia today for the Mako Mania….and that was just barely. Here are the current standings.

Also fishing the tournament, but not coming to the scales was the Wrecker with Captain Jeremy Blunt. Wrecker caught and released several sharks including 3 tiger sharks, 3 blue sharks , 1 dusky, 1 spinner, 1 sandbar and a baby great white. The great white was the first ever for Captain Jeremy in 22 years fishing in Ocean City.
Away from the tournament Captain Mark Hoos of the Marli had a good day of tuna fishing when he put his crew on two under bluefin tuna and a big old 176 pound bigeye tuna. Photo by Sunset Marina.
Captain Drew Zerbe of the Tortuga saw a new first place leader for the annual fish derby when Carol Lukehart landed this 3 pound 3 ounce flounder this morning.
David Moore of the Ocean City MD Fishing Community has been having some great luck in the Assateague surf lately. David caught and released the first black tip shark that I’ve seen this year that was a 70″ male and has also caught 6′ sandbar shark and rockfish of 38″ and 43″.
