Good Bottom Fishing and Trolling Offshore

Good Bottom Fishing and Trolling Offshore

It was another nice day today, all be it HOT, but there wasn’t a bunch of wind to speak of and no precipitation so there was plenty of fishing to be had.

The crew fishing on board the Boss Hogg with Captain Brian Porter had a great day in the deep putting a pile of yellowfin tuna on the dock at Sunset Marina.

The Spring Mix II with Captain Chris Watkowski and mate Ben Harding had a nice day for their crew with four yellowfin tuna going in the fishbox.

13-Year-0ld  Christian Bohlen caught and released his first ever blue marlin fishing on board the JEB with his dad Shawn and Mike Calder.

Matt Brown and his crew had a nice day in the Washington Canyon putting some big golden and blueline tilefish in the boat.

Captain Dave Caffrey of On the Run Charters had a fantastic 4th of July weekend with tons of fish including triggerfish, rockfish, trout and flounder up to 24.5″.

Baron caught this nice 39″ rockfish at the route 50 bridge on a live bunker.

Captain Marc Spagnola of Dusk to Dawn Bowfishing had a great holiday weekend putting his shooters on target for southern and cow nosed rays.

Captain Matt Moran had a good day on the Ocean Princess putting his anglers on a nice catch that included sea bass, flounder and triggerfish.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star had a slow start to the day, but he found his folks plenty of fish in overtime.

Ocean some beautiful this morning. Seventy five degree air temp with a light southerly breeze made for a fine run off. We paused briefly at Doug Ake’s Memorial Reef Group where members of scout troop 7155 – Johnny, Mathew & Dillon – sent a twenty block reef unit (block #44,020) into the NE corner before we resumed a course offshore.
Found lots of fish and put my anglers on a drift thinking we’d have a decent shot of repeating yesterday’s hot flounder bite..
Caught some (and I do mean ‘some’) sea bass.
After a few drifts I still hadn’t seen but one throwback flounder – so I anchored for better sea bass fishing.
That, of course, is when we caught a few keeper fluke.
Well OK then, just be that way..
(Sometimes decades of previous experience offers a poor guide to fish behavior.)
Mighty fussy fish this day. Bite did improve after lunch. Then better still after time to depart came and went. Ah well, in late again.
James took the money with his flounder while Hung was high hook with double digits in cbass and a keeper fluke.
Hard won fish this day – promise!
Cheers,
Monty

I found some flounder chewing in the east channel yesterday….check it out!!
