I had the pleasure of fishing with on the Morning Star today with Captain Monty Hawkins and mates Joey and Conner with my fraternity brothers from Sigma Pi at Towson State and we had an absolute blast! The weather was beautiful, the fishing was excellent and the company was even better. Thank you all for a great trip!
Though I had to settle for the Rt 50 view, sunrise offered a wonderful and uniquely colored event of pink and red pastels. Dagone sure it was a gorgeous day off there. My long-time friend Scott Lenox, now with twenty years under his belt broadcasting Hooked on OC (a local TV show grown to a far broader audience) had the whole rail today – a charter with his frat brothers.
After a good paddle the boys deployed a 16 block reef unit at St. Ann’s Reef, followed by two pyramids at Virginia Lee Hawkins’ Memorial Reef (you might guess a special place indeed for me..)
Immediately outside the Army Corps Artificial Reef permit boundary I deployed a pair of small flag buoys for summer skippers to judge current with. These buoys are not intended to harbor mahi – only to help facilitate fishing by indicating drift.
Should mahi be spotted?
..they should be removed.
Then we went fishing.
A calm Saturday in high-summer; lots of boats. Weren’t much ocean didn’t have a prop cut through it today.
We worked tiny patches of coral. At least I think the corals are still there. Need to drop a camera down and have a look. Sea bass were somewhat cooperative on a few of those patches at least.
Scott managed to pull a decent inshore mahi out from under a pot-flag that had already been fished 1/2 a dozen times that morning. Minor miracle really.
Dinner for sure.
Well, maybe..
Hard choice. Sea bass sure are mighty sweet.
Ocean gave up its mirror finish by mid-morning. Light easterlies replacing that calm did little more than ripple the water.
Nice day on the rip.
Hope tomorrow’s another one.
With winds forecast under ten knots all day, looks to be. Have a couple spots open.
Cheers, Monty
Today was day 1 for the Ocean City Marlin Club Kid’s Classic. Here are your leaders after the first day of fishing.
Captain Austin Ensor and his crew on Primary Search had a great overnight trip that ended with two huge bigeye tuna in the box that weighed in at 199 and 234 pounds.
Team MobSquad had a terrific Jimmy Johnson Quest for the Ring Tournament this week winning 2nd place in the yellowfin stringer category and over $26,000.
The crew of Spring Mix II with Captain Chris Watkowski had a good day of trolling with three yellowfin tuna.
The crew of Split Bill Sportfishing had a little slower day offshore today, but still managed a nice tuna on deck.
Captain Will on Local Hooker had a nice day inshore today with a bunch of throwback flounder and one nice keeper.
Joe Mildon and Ron Taylor had a good day of casting XRaps at the route 50 bridge. The guys had flounder up to 23″ and some big bluefish to 27″.
