It was a little cool this morning and there was even a fog delay for local schools which kept it overcast and a little dreary through midday, but by this afternoon the fog had burned off and it had warmed up really nicely. Tomorrow looks to be similar with fog expected, but the temperatures look to be even warmer with highs that could reach the 70s.
I had a great day today fishing the Pocomoke River with my good friend Captain Brian Behe of Buffalo Hunter Guide Service and another good friend John Wittmyer of Crabs to Go for an upcoming episode of Hooked on OC. We fished Nassawango Creek casting jig heads, tubes and grubs and landed a bunch of crappie, two big chain pickerel and one large mouth bass. We had a great crab cake lunch cooked up by John and we had a blast catching fish and shooting the breeze with great friends. Captain Brian and John headed back out after dropping Dave Messick and I off and added a few more largemouth bass for good measure. The Pocomoke is a really beautiful river with lots of wildlife and great fishing. If you like freshwater fishing and/or have kids this trip with Brian is a winner!
We’ll be filming back to back Hooked on OC episodes when we head out tomorrow with Captain Jeff Coats of Pitboss Fishing. Captain Jeff will be taking us to the route 90 bridge in the back bay to get on some of the rockfish that have been snapping. Captain Jeff and his bride Karen were at it today and had a good day catching some fish on Roy Rigs on what was Karen’s last day off for a few. Captain Jeff reported 47 degree water and sluggish bites, but fish that were still cooperative.
Offshore fishing out of North Carolina is heating up and two guys in our fleet had BIG bluefin tuna today. Captain Ed Kauffman and mate Bryan Hazard fished the Restless Lady II today out of NC and landed this huge 600 pound bluefin tuna. The big bluefin hit a blue and white Joe Shute with a ballyhoo and took an hour to get to the boat on a 130 class setup.
Captain Marc Spagnola of Dusk to Dawn Bowfishing is usually busting rays in the back bays of Ocean City, but today he was with my buddy Captain Jimmy Hahn fishing out of NC also. Marc and Captain Jimmy landed this 86″, 351 pound bluefin tuna during what has been a good tuna bite down there for the past few days.
