Today wasn’t quite as beautiful as it has been over the past week, but it was still plenty nice. On the beach it was overcast pretty much all day and I had the wipers on a couple of times for raindrops, but overall it was pretty nice and it was very fishable. Unfortunately it looks to be crappy tomorrow and the wind is going to blow and probably keep the offshore fleet at the dock for a few days.
I got some really great pics and a good story from my buddy Kevin McCabe today of the HUGE bigeye tuna that was caught on his boat Double Trouble yesterday. Kevin, John Curry, Eric Budd and Kevin’s “Double Trouble” sons Gavin and Graham left for a day of trolling yesterday morning and just 4 miles from the Baltimore Canyon they blew the lower unit on one of their outboards. A decision was made to only fish until noon because of the anticipated long ride home and at 10 AM they got a bite from a good fish and angler John Curry fought the fish solo stand up on a 50 for an hour and put it in the boat at 11 AM. They left for home at 11:30 and didn’t get back to the dock until 6:20 PM. When they did finally arrive at the scale at Sunset Marina their bigeye weighed in at an impressive 235 pounds! Congratulations to Kevin and the crew and thanks to the fish Gods for looking out for them on a bummer of a mechanical day.
It wasn’t quite as calm or as crowded in the canyons today and thanks to that the fishing was a little bit better. Captain Chris Little of the Talkin’ Trash had one heck of a day putting 11 yellowfin tuna in the box with some real bruisers mixed in there. Talkin’ Trash had a really nice 106 pounder in the box today.
The crew of the All In with Captain Scott Stapleford at the helm had a good day of fishing out in the deep today too. Captain Scott put his crew on five nice yellowfin tuna and 15 mahi of which five were big gaffers. The crew also pulled the hook on a nice bigeye at the boat. Christian Smith sent me a cool shot from the webcam on top of Bahia Marina too.
Eric Milton and his crew had a nice day on board the Restless Lady II with Captain Sean Welsh up on the bridge.
Captain Joe Drosey and the crew of Rhonda’s Osprey found a good yellowfin tuna and six mahi on today’s trip to the deep.
The Instigator with Captain Josh Wentling is prepping to head back to his slip at the Ocean City Fishing Center soon, but in the meantime he’s been having great luck at his spot in Manteo, NC. Captain Josh has been putting some great mahi and some big tuna in the boat.
Captain Chris Mizurak on the party boat Angler reported good sea bass fishing today over ocean structure. Trent had the hot hand on board today with 13 keeper sea bass on his own with two big fish weighing 3.25 and 3.5 pounds.
The flounder fishing in the back bays is still impressive and making me wish that I could get the skiff out a little more. Captain John Prather of Ocean City Guide Service was all over the flounder again today putting two keepers in the boat this morning and another five in the boat this afternoon.
Captain Drew Zerbe of the Tortuga found a couple more keepers on this afternoon’s trip and one of them was a new seasonal Derby leader at 3.6 pounds.
On the Run Charters with Captain Dave Caffrey has been having some luck in the back bay with flounder and on the jetty with sheepshead. These three keepers landed in the boat this week and the big sheepshead was caught by Tina Knies and weighed 8 1/2 pounds.
Bear down at the Oceanic Pier sent me another shot of Don from New Castle, DE who landed another nice keeper flounder from the 2nd street bulkhead on a live minnow.
