Less Wind, More Fish

Less Wind, More Fish

There was still a pretty stiff breeze blowing out of the south today, but it wasn’t too bad and it is forecast to lay down over the next day or so as we usher in high pressure and really warm temperatures.  This weekend is supposed to be HOT and sea conditions are supposed to be pretty nice so I’m certain that there are going to be a ton of anglers on the water on what is the first of two 4th of July weekends.

There is absolutely no doubt that there is some insane tuna fishing going on right now with lots of yellowfin tuna offshore in the canyons.  There are also more billfish and mahi being caught on a daily basis as well and I’d say that this summer is off to a terrific start.  Captain Brian Porter was on the bridge of the Boss Hogg today and he put the waylay on some tuna and mahi.  Captain Brian put his crew on 16 yellowfin tuna and some nice gaffer mahi.

Ed Hileman and crew had a nice day on the MARLI with Captain Mark Hoos and mates Michael Butler and Chase Neiderer.  The crew put nine yellowfin tuna and six mahi in the box.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star reported sporty sea conditions today, but he also reported a nice catch of fish.  The Bealla and Green clans display their catch of flounder and sea bass from today’s trip.

It was pretty windy in the back bay today, but the inshore fleet got it done despite the tough conditions.  Captain Dave Caffrey of On the Run Charters had nice days yesterday and today.  Yesterday Captain Dave put his anglers on two keeper sheepshead and two keeper rockfish of 30″ and 31″ followed by another trip that resulted in a great catch of black drum.  Today it was some keeper flounder for his crew.

I got to do a little fishing myself today with my buddy Captain Luke Blume, his son Joshua and our good friend Jon Henry.  Jon caught a 17″ keeper flounder for the box and we added some more throwbacks on live minnows and Gulp baits in the east channel.

Captain Brad McCabe of Bay Time Charters snuck out for a quick solo trip today where he landed four keepers and four throwbacks only keeping the two largest fish for dinner.

Bay conditions were tough for Captain Marc Spagnola of Dusk to Dawn Bowfishing today too, but he was able to put his shooters on some good action for cow nosed and southern rays by grinding it out.

Captain Chase Eberle is in the ocean right now (9:15), but is still close enough to send a report.  He’ll send a full report for tomorrow’s Daily Angle, but Jack Kalina has already released a 6′ sand tiger shark.
