Over the past couple of weeks we have seen ocean bottom fishing improve with some awesome catches of flounder and sea bass with some very nice fish in the mix. The local ocean bottom fishing fleet have seen some limits of both flounder and sea bass with some of the biggest flounder reaching over 7 pounds and some of the biggest sea bass going over 5 pounds. It should get better before it slows down too with water temperatures moving into the sweet spot over the next several weeks.
Captain Kane Bounds and Captain Kevin Twilley of the Fish Bound have been seeing some terrific flounder fishing over the past few weeks with limits on most every trip with fish to over 7 pounds.
Captain Chris Mizurak had a good day with the flounder yesterday with some very nice fish coming over the rail with some fish to over 6 pounds.
Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star saw a few flounder yesterday, but he saw more big sea bass.
Day began with a glorious sunrise. Owing daylight savings shenanigans, however, my boat was at the dock for it. Underway soon after sunup, we found calm seas and, as predicted, light southerlies that barely rippled the sea’s surface.
Was a calm that wouldn’t last long. Thankfully it didn’t get too saucy til near-about the last spot.
Guest reef builders, Andrew & Mike, deployed a twenty block unit at an experimental reef.
Underway immediately after, we came through an enormous fleet of boats targeting bluefin tuna. I had Joe & Jeff count them twice. There were 82 boats within eyesight; only 2 were targeting sea bass or fluke.
As sometimes happens, my first few drops offered precious few fish. Some were right decent, including Hawk’s fluke; but it didn’t look like enough of a bite to get coolers looking as I’d like.
We pressed on again.
By then those light southerlies had begun growing teeth. Pushing 15 knots, it sure looked like seas might become fairly nautical.
Dern sure the bite improved. George had only reeled in twice – both times were keeper doubles with one a jumbo.
Saw a few triggerfish this day. We catch a handful as they move offshore every year. Certainly never enough to advertise.
Boated some fluke too. They spawn on the reefs I target for sea bass and should be about done by now.
Wish it had been a faster pace, but that was what the sea offered this day. Dern sure some nice fish though!
It was a cold one out there today, and will be for the next several days with high temperatures in the 40s for the foreseeable future. The wind is gonna blow some too, but it didn’t… READ MORE
