We’ve had some wicked thunderstorms rolling through the Ocean City area recently, but the one that rolled through the Ocean City inlet early this afternoon put all of them to shame. I happened to be on the road and I can honestly say I’ve never driven in such hard rain. I was only able to make about 35 MPH on route 50 heading west and visibility was limited to about 100 feet. Wes Pollitt was on the Morning Star after just returning to the slip and he said it felt like a tornado. Wes reported driving rain, estimated wind gusts of 60 MPH, hail, and visibility of less than 80 feet. He couldn’t see the boats on the other side of the canal at the Ocean City Fishing Center….it was a doozie.
Captain Franky Pettolina of the Last Call out of The Ocean City Fishing Center has been on a tear with the big mahi the past couple of days. Captain Franky put his anglers for the Big Fish Classic on a 28 pound mahi over the weekend to win first place in the category and a check for $7,500. Today he put angler Eryn Naldony on a gorgeous 45 pound bruiser of a bull mahi. Erin, Jeff Nadolny, Matt Nadolny, Tim Kratz and Nick Vrankin also caught 10 other gaffer mahi on trolled ballyhoo in the Poor Man’s Canyon.
Captain Joe Drosey on the charter boat Rhonda’s Osprey out of Sunset Marina had a good day chunking the tuna in Massey’s Canyon. Captain Joe put his crew on five nice yellowfin chunking butterfish.
The Morning Star with Captain Monty Hawkins had some good fishing today before the thunderstorm. Anglers on the Morning Star had a good pick of sea bass and some flounder, including two guys that had their limit of flounder. Mike Ziegler caught himself a nice double of sea bass. Mate Wes Pollitt took a busman’s holiday yesterday on another local party boat and caught seven keeper sized flounder including a nice 6 1/2 pound fish that won the fish pool. Like taking candy from a baby.
Captain Jeff Coats of Pitboss Fishing had some good action in the bay today. Captain Jeff put his anglers on the Bad Influence on some croaker and about 30 throwback sized flounder. It was some great family fun for his young anglers.
Ayrton Pryor, mate on the Spring Mix II, had a good day with the flounder today. Ayrton and Jacob Lewis had five throwback flounder and two keepers measuring 19″ and 20″ that they caught on jig heads and white Gulp in the Thorofare.
