Marlin and Tunas For the Fourth of July

Marlin and Tunas For the Fourth of July

It was a hot one out there today, but with a little south breeze and some occasional cloud cover it was a nice day to be on the water.  I got to go fishing with my buddy Big Bird Cropper for a new episode of Hooked on OC and it was a blast as usual.  We had a limit of bluefish, one trout, some rockfish, a small flounder and an umbrella.  Awesome time!

We’ve got some awesome fishing going on offshore so it should be a great OC Marlin Club Canyon Kick Off this weekend.  The crew of Pumpin’ Hard had a great day today with a blue marlin release, some yellowfin tuna and a mahi.

The crew of Boss Hogg had an awesome day with the tunas today putting a pile of nice fish on the dock at Sunset Marina.

Captain Chris Watkowski and the two angler crew of Spring Mix II had a fantastic day of fishing with a limit of yellowfin tuna.

Kevin McNelis and his folks had a banner day of flounder fishing over ocean structure catching a three man limit of fish in just over 2 hours.

Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break Charters had two good trips today with flounder in the morning and then some very nice sheepshead and black drum this afternoon.

This nice keeper flounder was caught on the Calico Jack this afternoon with Captain Drew at the helm.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star enjoyed the seas today and his anglers enjoyed the fishing.

A bit of swell greeted us this morning at the inlet. Not much, just a sign there had been wind elsewhere – sure wasn’t any breeze to speak of here. We eased on off to Gratitude Reef where Sarah, Tony, John & Brian made a block unit deployment. If the fish weren’t looking up? ..we probably squished a few sea bass.
Found ourselves further offshore at lines-in.
Tepid.
The bite began with precious few bites despite screens slam full of sea bass. Was, by far, the most fish I saw on my screens all day, yet the worst of a day that was not good!
Was a pretty tough pick most of the day really with Brian exercising his reef builder’s karma to bag the pool fish.
Mercy!
Made another FB post for crew a couple days ago – an amazing response this time. Will be trying a few Fishing New Guys (& a Navy gal!) with some of my old mates: Carlos (2 years), Vic (5 years) & Tim (4 years) with em on deck. Takes a while to bring newbs up to snuff but they’ll have good instructors!
Should be some great news in the reef building dept next week. Aside Capt. Stormy’s June sixteenth 208 pyramid deployment at the Bass Grounds, it’s been a frustrating year in reef construction. I think the dam is about to burst though. Have 6 vessels and nearly 1,000 pyramids in the lineup. Aim to put em all to work!
Cheers,
Monty
