More Marlin

More Marlin

It was HOT today man….reely hot….but it was also beautiful with light winds and sunny skies so there were a bunch of anglers on the water and once again there were a bunch of fish caught.

As the water temps in the canyons climb into the upper 70s and low 80s there are more and more marlin and other warm water fish moving into our offshore canyons.  It is not uncommon now for boats to raise several white marlin in a trip and get a couple of shots and Fish in OC charter partner No Quarter actually had three blue marlin hooked up today.  Ryan Purdy was the lucky angler to land one of the blues at an estimated 450 pounds.  The other two blue marlin came unglued and Captain Kyle Peete estimated one fish to be at or over 800 pounds.

Captain Jeremy Blunt of the Wrecker had a terrific day on the ocean today catching fish from just about every level of the water column.  The crew of Wrecker released two white marlin and boxed a yellowfin tuna, several mahi, some blue line tilefish and some nice sea bass.

No photo for this one, but Garrett Selander released a blue marlin and boxed a handful of mahi while fishing on the Spring Mix II with Captain Chris Watkowski and mates Ayrton “The Kayak Kid” Pryor and Jacob Lewis.  The action took place between the Washington and Norfolk Canyons.

Inshore fishing continues to produce all sorts of fish for happy anglers.  Today Captain John Prather had a great day on the ocean when he put his morning crew on some great action for spanish and king mackerel.  This afternoon it was some catch and release shark fishing and a keeper flounder for the box.

Captain Jeff Coats of Pitboss Fishing had the Bad Influence on the ocean for some catch and release shark fishing as well today.  Grandfather Rick Welch, son Joel and grandson Ethan had a fun time releasing Atlantic sharpnose sharks with Captain Jeff this afternoon.

Captain Chase Eberle finished up his trip last night with some really good shark fishing action.  The group added four more shark releases to their total and Matt Blakeley reeled in this monster 102″ sand tiger shark.

On the Run Charters with Captain Dave Caffrey had a successful day today on the rocks of the OC inlet putting his anglers on some keeper sheepshead and tautog.  You can keep tautog again at a 16″ minimum length and a creel of two fish per person.

Bear down at the Oceanic Pier submitted this photo of a couple of nice keeper flounder that were caught on the 2nd street bulkhead on live spot.

My best buddies Captain Luke Blume and Joshua hit the little gull bank today where Joshua caught his first ever cobia that was 30″ long and the guys released about 15 sharks.

Joshua and his sister Emily have also come up with a really awesome idea.  The kids started a contest to see who could take the most mylar balloons out of the ocean and they are going to reward someone with some really cool prizes.  Lots of boats are participating with Blume’s Balloon Roundup and there are a lot of balloons that are dangerous to marine life coming out of the ocean and bays.  Today was a killer day for the effort with 160 balloons coming out of the ocean for a total of 200 in just three days!  Thanks to everyone participating with such a great cause and congrats to the kids for coming up with such a great idea.  I’m super proud of you!!
