One of the Calmest Days of the Year

One of the Calmest Days of the Year

Yup, it was easy one of the calmest days of the year so far out in the ocean today.  I can tell you from first hand experience as I was out there filming a new Hooked on OC on board the Wound Tight with Captain Shawn Gibson and crew along with Jeremy Kohr from Kohr’s Outdoors.  We had a great day on the flat calm ocean catching blueline tilefish to about 24″, golden tiles to about 20 pounds and some black belly rosefish.  It was a gorgeous day on the ocean and should make for a great show!

Captain Nick Sampson and the crew of MobSquad Fishing was on Lake Atlantic today as well and had a nice day with the tilefish too.  They also added some nice sea bass and some mahi.

The crew of Spring Mix II with Captain Chris Watkowski had a nice day in the deep with a yellowfin tuna and a box full of mahi.

Luke Wrye and Mr. Bob had a great day of flounder fishing over ocean structure with this nice catch of flounder up to 22″.

Randy Mentzer of Mentzer Custom Trailers caught a couple of nice keeper flounder today and lost another at the boat.

Joe Whaley is fishing up off of Nantucket Shoals this weekend and wanted to share this beauty of an 8.5 pound flounder that he caught on his new Deadly Tackle 7′ 6″ ocean stick.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star enjoyed today’s flat calm seas and his anglers enjoyed some very good fishing.

Mercy! What an incredibly calm day; and, as it happened, incredibly fortunate too.. With barely a detectable swell it was easily among the year’s calmest.
In a fine bit of luck friend and angler extraordinaire, David Confair (Cornflour to many of his friends) had a bunch of folks from down home come visit us today.
He knew – I expect they all knew – what a pain in the elbow water temps have been. Had some hard days. Whoever said, “A bad day of fishing beats a good day at work” dern sure didn’t do this for a living..
Underway placid seas a while; Alyssa, Mackenzie, Cassidy & Amanda deployed 28 blocks and a pyramid atop one of my (already successful!) artificial reef restoration projects before pressing onward. Played a hunch on these areas of cold water that have caused my migraine count to skyrocket – took a ride.
David Confair… I swear! He really should be required to have a sonar pinger to warn fish and crabs of his presence.
David had a limit of sea bass by 11:15. His cousin JR took the pool with a fine cbass. A few others finished the day in double digits.
On yesterday’s mahi trip I doubt I had a single limit of cbass all combined. Lots of days like that while struggling with this (hard to conceive of) ocean floor cold snap. With 80+ degrees on the surface and 47/48 degrees on the bottom it’s been the better part of two months since I had a limit of cbass aboard, I think. Sea bass are always tougher in high summer – but not that tough!
Sure looks like they chew good when it’s a tad warmer.
Hungry.
I doubt it’s over though. Seems in and out – cold water moving around. Weather at week’s end looks to reshuffle the whole deck. It’s hard to guess: A) If the forecast is anywhere near accurate, and what will happen to our nearshore fishing if it is!
If it’s right we’ll get caught up on dock work for sure. (Well, I doubt I’ve ever seen “done” on a boat. Derned if there isn’t always something else needs doing. Have a long list growing.)
Today’s the first time I’ve been in as-scheduled in a month.
Great crowd, good bite, calm seas, built some reef – I’d almost want to do this for a living..
Cheers All!
Monty
