Reel Tight Wins Over $240,000 in HUK Big Fish Classic

I just returned from a long night at the 5th Annual HUK Big Fish Classic tournament and I have to say it was an exciting third day of action.  We had a feeling on Friday when we found out that 65 of 67 boats would be fishing the second 32 hour window that scales action today might be crazy and we were right.  We saw just about every offshore fish that we catch off of Ocean City at the scales today including white marlin, round scaled spearfish, blue marlin, swordfish, yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna, bigeye tuna and wahoo.  Money switched hands several times and in the end the big winners were the crew of the Reel Tight who weighed a nice blue marlin and received a check for over $240,000!  Here’s how things kind of shook out.  Thanks to Kristin Lewis for the photos!

Billfish Release     Moore Bills     9 White Marlin     $8,820

Small Boat     Primary Search     188 Lb Swordfish     $9,090

Heaviest Dolphin     No Quarter     36.5 Lbs     $14,850

Heaviest Wahoo     Tail to Tale     51.5 Lbs     $11,610

Heaviest Tuna     Michael Joe     120.5 Lbs     $21,060

3rd Place Big Fish     Underdog     354.5 Lb Blue Marlin     $19,590

2nd Place Big Fish     Bent Tent     379.5 Lb Blue Marlin     $48,725

1st Place Heaviest Fish / Heaviest Yellowfin     Reel Tight     $244,095

Outside of the tournament the crew of the Spring Mix II with Captain Chris Watkowski and mate Ayrton “The Kayak Kid” Pryor had a good day in the Washington Canyon putting their crew on one yellowfin tuna and three nice mahi.

Yesterday Captain Kurt Howell had a good day of fishing putting Robert Wieczorkowski on his first white marlin and adding a couple of yellowfin tuna for the box.  Fishing with Kurt were Robert Wieczorkowski Sr. and Jr., Corey Cook and Paul Carlini.

Captain Chase Eberle of Chasin’ Tides Charters had some fun catch and release inshore shark fishing releasing some sandbar and sand tiger sharks.

Captain Chris Mizurak of the Angler had a good day of fishing today over ocean structure when he put his anglers on some quality sea bass and flounder on squid and strip baits.

Captian Monty Hawkins had a good day of “fluking” today over ocean structure as well.  The report came in something like this…..Deer Editir, Demens flukes bitz a bit dis day. Cheers!

Captain Monty also did some great work on a reef in memory of our dear friend and couldn’t have worded the Facebook post any better…Just sank a barge In Memory Of Capt. Jack Kaeufer.. While standing by waiting for air bubbles to clear for a perfect set of gps coordinates I swore I saw triggerfish on my sounders..
Yup, it’s going to be a great place to freedive, Fish, and scuba.
We’ll drop thousands of reef blocks at Jack’s Reef too. Soon mussels & bryzoa will grow, then coral in their slow pace.
Thanks to all who support our reef constructions: thanks tonight especially to the many who donated generously in honor of Jack.
Going to be a great reef – Promise.

If you would like to make a donation to help build reef off of Ocean City you can check out the Ocean City Reef Foundation on their website here…..ocreefs.org

Captain Marc Spagnola of Dusk to Dawn Bowfishing had another good day of shooting with action on cow nosed and southern rays in the back bay.
