Rougher Than Expected, But Still Had Good Fishing

Rougher Than Expected, But Still Had Good Fishing

Check out our “12 Days of Christmas” at Atlantic Tackle!

I had the pleasure of heading out on the bay today with my very good buddy Big Bird Cropper and though the weather and fishing weren’t the best….the day was because I was fishing with my pal.  We didn’t catch much, but we did manage some throwback rockfish action at the route 50 bridge and I caught a big shad on the tip of the north jetty.  For December, I’ll take it!

Captain Kane Bounds of the Fish Bound has started to do a little more tautog fishing over the past few weeks and fishing has been good for the current World Record tautog holding Captain.  They’ve seen good fishing with lots of limits and fish to as big as 14 p0unds.

Bird and I saw Captain DJ Churchill of the Double Trouble heading in the inlet this afternoon after his trip and was glad to see his post to Facebook just a little later.  Captain DJ put his anglers on some good fishing for tautog on today’s trip.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star had to try a couple of spots today, but he managed a nice day of sea bass for his folks.

Nice enough sunrise – already off the beach a-ways when it popped. Kept going.
Jonathan dropped twenty more blocks on Rambler Reef – Bullseye. Already 18 knots of wind; saw a jag of fish and tried em. Found no joy. Gave it maybe 15 minutes.
One keeper in a hundred?
More?
Pull anchor.
Another spot, another; wind falls out to 12 knots. Had a few coming then got dogged up (green-eyed devils, we were catching spiny dogfish every drop.)
Oh no.
Anchor up/back down – another and another.. Sheesh. High man had 4.
Threw a Hail Mary – failed utterly.
Dang.
Threw another.
Settled in for some catching. Sure wasn’t all keeper sea bass but plenty better. I honestly don’t know how clients can reel so many fish. Two limits – folks in double digits. George first. Neal took the pool amid plenty of competition.
By and by bluefish made their presence felt. Hardly anyone saved any. Back in the day there was always someone around the docks who smoked em for half. No more. Bled and iced; smoked blue makes good fish – gourmet even. Simply baked with a few tablespoons of mild salsa? That makes a fine dish too.
Big wind coming. Double her lines tonight. Let the boys go play in the woods awhile.
Tuesday and Wednesday are in the reservation book already. Plenty of spots open. Looks like Thur/Fri/Sat will play too. (Not announced yet – open new dates in Fish Report emails from morningstarfishing.com )
Have 4 weekly drawings left in the Reef Raffle, then grand prizes New Year’s Day. We have fantastic prizes!
I’m pretty sure this will be the year we build a reef with pipe units.
If you & friends play the reef raffle – I know we’ll fund that project!
Cheers,
Monty
Shawn Flaherty fished the rocks at the south jetty and fooled this red drum with a Roy Rig.
We’ve got a couple of great variety packs available at www.Deadly-Tackle.com now thorough December 15.  One Flounder Variety Pack and one Inshore Variety Pack that make great gifts for the fisher in the family.
Check them out here…..
