Man was it foggy today!! It was foggy all day long and it was thick and extensive. The report from the offshore fleet is that the fog extended 60 miles from the inlet. That makes for careful running out in the morning!
The Boss Hogg with Captain Chris Irelan fishing out of Sunset Marina had a very special guest on board today. Royce Gracie, MMA star and Jiu-Jitsu champion was on board today with Juan Franzetti and his crew and had one heck of a trip. Royce released his first ever white marlin, 11 year old Lucas Franzetti caught his first ever tuna and together the crew caught a total of four nice yellowfin, five gaffer mahi, Royce’s white marlin and a 160 pound mako shark. The Hogg was fishing in 150 fathoms in the Poor Man’s Canyon where they had 73 degree water. Awesome stuff!
Chess Hedrick and his crew had a great day on the charter boat Marli with Captain Mark Hoos and mate Mark Stephens. They boxed 9 big yellowfin tuna and 7 of the largest mahi landed this year (3 over 20lbs). All of the fish were caught on spreader bars and ballyhoo’s.
The Ocean Princess with Captain Victor Bunting had a decent day with the sea bass today out in the ocean. Anglers caught nice sea bass up to a couple of pounds on clams.
Bear down at the Oceanic Pier reports the same bluefish, shad and striper action with plenty of fish being caught on the high tide. He submitted this photo of an angler that caught a small shark fishing from the pier this morning.
The 20th Annual Mako Mania starts tomorrow and it looks like it’s going to be an awesome event. There are 58 boats entered and the if the first place mako shark is “across the board” on the calcuttas it will bring in around $50,000. Stop by the scales at Bahia Marina tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday from 3:30 to 7:30 each day. I’ll see you there!
