Sheepshead, Flounder and Rock

Sheepshead, Flounder and Rock

Man this is my time of year!!  This morning started off at a brisk 53 degrees with low humidity, sunny skies and very light winds and it got even better from there.  I took advantage of the beautiful weather and got the Fish in OC skiff out to shake off the bottom growth this evening and it was absolutely beautiful!  Temperatures were cool, the bay was flat calm…….AND THE CROWDS ARE GONE!!!  The bay has got a little more peaceful feeling to it and fishing is pretty darn good right now!

I continue to be surprised by the number of sheepshead that are being caught in the Ocean City inlet right now.  There are some nice fish being caught from both the north and south jetty from boaters and anglers fishing from shore.  Sand fleas and green crabs are the best baits right now and the top of the high tide seems to be the best time.  The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has confirmed a new state record for sheepshead.  I reported last week that Robert Martin caught an 18 pound sheepshead in the Ocean City inlet on a green crab and weighed it at the Ocean City Fishing Center and now it has been confirmed to be a new MD state record.  Congratulations to Robert on his awesome catch!!

Captain John Prather of Ocean City Guide Service was out for the sheepshead today and found success.  Captain John put his anglers on three healthy sheep while fishing the inlet.

Nick Denny of the Ocean City Fishing Community had a killer day with the sheepshead today as well.  Nick kayaked to the south jetty this afternoon and was rewarded with 10 sheepshead including this beauty.

Although flounder fishing has proved to be a little more difficult there were some fish caught today.  The water in the back bay is far from clean, but the fish are hungry and there are lots of throwback to be had with a few keepers mixed in.  Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break Charters put this angler on a nice 20″ keeper on the outgoing tide today.

My buddy Big Bird Cropper had a good time fishing with his buddy Red Beard.  The duo caught and released over 40 throwback flounder and some small rockfish and boxed these two nice keepers.

The Tortuga with Captain Drew Zerbe at the helm had this keeper from this morning’s trip.

Brian Roberts of the HUK Big Fish Classic sent me this photo of his son Kellan who caught this bluefish while fly fishing.  This was Kellan’s first bluefish stripping and catching by himself.  Way to go Kellan!
