Sheepshead, Flounder, Mahi and Sea Bass

Sheepshead, Flounder, Mahi and Sea Bass

The southerly breeze was a little stiffer than expected today, but it was still very nice with warm temps and sunny skies.  I was able to get to the south jetty and the east channel with my buddy Bryan Mindte of Sunset Provisions and we had a great day putting three keeper sheepshead and a keeper flounder on ice.  We also caught a striper and a tautog for the “inshore slam”.  🙂

Captain Alex Beane and the crew of the Boss Hogg had a great day in the canyon today with a pile of mahi for the fish cleaners at Sunset Marina.

Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break was at the south jetty for a while today and he put his folks on some nice fishing too with four keeper sheepshead and a tautog.  The two largest sheepshead went 8 and 9 pounds.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star had to work for it today, but his clients put plenty of fish in the boat.

Oh Boy, thought the weatherman had thrown us a curveball this day. Lot more morning wind than forecast. Piped down just before New Fishing Guy mates, Eddy and Marty, deployed blocks on Capt. Big Dad’s Memorial Reef. Then winds stayed plenty calm all day.
Bite began well enough but soon turned into a summer bite – catch well and quit. Haul anchor, move, reset anchor – then catch well for a bit before they’d quit.
Bit of a pain, but way better than the cold bottom temp bite that dragged on through much of summer.
Didn’t see many dogone toothy scoundrels in warmer water – cutlassfish were absent. I sure didn’t mind. Then today we had a small school of em shut the bite off completely at one spot. Don’t recall seeing that before. Maybe though.
After lots of anchor practice for crew, Bob limited first – then Hurricane followed by Holly – who again pulled a triple on two hooks! (two keepers too)
Everyone else had plenty for dinner except one lady angler I’m especially fond of..
Truth of it? She worked the rail like a deckhand a good while..
Yup. More than one way to a skipper’s heart. She caught plenty enough for sashimi tonight at least. So delish with seaweed salad, soy and wasabi – or sweet chili sauce, hoisin or gochujang sauce..
Cheers All!
Monty
