Some Decent Sea Bass Fishing and Some Bigger Flounder Around

Some Decent Sea Bass Fishing and Some Bigger Flounder Around

Today’s weather was kind of like the fishing, not bad, but not great either.  It was overcast for most of the day and the sun even came out this afternoon, but it was foggy this morning and muggy this evening.  Like I said, not great, but not bad either.

Captain Dave Caffrey of On the Run reported in this morning with the first fish of the day and it was a nice one.  Austin caught this 22″ keeper flounder in this morning’s fog.

Anglers fishing on board Lucky Break had some fun fishing in the fog this morning as well with some good flounder ending up in the net.

Captain Chase Eberle of Chasin’ Tides had a nice day for his anglers with a pile of keeper sea bass from the ocean.  Chasin’ Tides also captured a tagged flounder in the bay this afternoon.

Captain Marc Spagnola of Dusk to Dawn Bowfishing showed his clients a good time with some cow nosed and southern rays from the south bay.

Captain Marc also joined Erik Farley, Jimmy Winebrenner and Ryan Haugh on board the Instigator for a tuna adventure that produced a very nice catch.  Instigator left Sunset Marina on Saturday evening, traveled WAY SOUTH off the coast of NC, caught nine tunas and made it back for breakfast on Sunday morning.

I got to see Judy Schaible’s flounder prowess first hand on the Angler the other day when she caught a limit of four fish on our Fish in OC fishing trip.  Well, today she did it again on board the Ocean Princess with Captain Matthew Moran at the helm.  Judy put three very nice fish in the box with all of them being over 20″.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star had an extended trip to the rip today and his folks were rewarded with some nice sea bass and a couple of limits.

Thought sure I’d have a really light rail for this quick scheduled long trip. I had booked Monday out for me and the boys to go overnight tuna fishing but the tuna bite doesn’t seem within reach of my rig, nor did Tuesday’s weather look at all enamoring.
All-of-a-sudden trip almost sold out..
Weatherman looked to be on point this morning. Light east winds made for a somewhat unpleasant trip off, but it wasn’t all that. Came another fog too. Don’t know if it was clean back to the beach or not. I expect suntan lotion sellers are off to a slow start either way.
After Tony & Burt sent our block unit into the briney, I locked in a new course and held it a right good while.
Time we got to the first spot winds had fallen out to nothing. Sea conditions improved rapidly.
Fog worsened.
By 10 it was evident the weatherman would keep his streak of zero correct forecasts alive. No forecast I saw mentioned NNW winds. Glad they didn’t breeze up as NW often will. Thankful too the wind cleared the fog off.
The bite wasn’t horrible, at least to start with at each spot. It was also true that I left each spot with stacks of fish on my screens – yet not one more fish would bite.
Yup.
Do that sometimes. Often really.
Mathew swept the pool.
Capt. Don sealed the deal with a limit at 1:10 – He was far ahead of the pack.
Poor Holly.. She was either plum wore out from being high-hook yesterday ..or the Hurricane drove down in the night & found her lucky rod; put some nasty juju on it.
We’ll never know.
Cheers
Monty
