Some Hammers in the Ocean

Some Hammers in the Ocean

We’ve had some really awesome temperatures lately and very little precipitation, but we have seen a little bit of wind blow up this week.  Kristen and I headed out this afternoon to try some sheepshead fishing at the south jetty, but when we turned the corner to the south and got hit in the face with 4′-5′ chop, we scrapped that idea.  Seems as if this morning was pretty nice on the ocean and the bay, but by this afternoon it was pretty uncomfortable in a lot of spots.  Thankfully there were already fish in ice.

Captain Tony Battista of Saltwater Adventures has been having some good luck at the Bass Grounds recently and today it was more of the same with flounder, sea bass and triggerfish.  Captain Tony had some hammers too with three of his flounder combined weight being over 17 pounds.  That’s one he’ll like for next year’s Flounder Royale!

Yesterday, the crew of the Boss Hogg with Captain Alex Beane had an awesome day of offshore trolling with 17 white marlin releases.

Captain Marc Spagnola of Dusk to Dawn Bowfishing had a great day of ocean bottom fishing boxing his limit of keeper flounder.

Scott Lathroum used some Deadly Tackle and caught this nice sheepshead at the south jetty.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star found a couple of mahi on today’s trip and a good number of keeper sea bass.

Discovering a gloriously calm sea and fine art sunrise at the inlet this morning; we’d paddled only a short way before a light southerly breeze began to form wavelets upon ocean waters. Further off Brian & Todd made a small contribution towards future coral growth along Maryland’s coast with today’s block/pyramid drop.
Further east still we hooked up a nice nearshore mahi on our first drop – then another & another on consecutive drops–but peanuts. Lonely hearts club peanuts.
Four more mini mahi destined to not become a wahoo’s next snack were boxed soon after – best ‘school’ of the day wasn’t grand. Sure nice to have some aboard though
Paddled offshore further
..and found cooler water!
A degree and a half chillier.
Dagone it.
Nice sea bass nearby though.
From scarcely any drift all morning to moving along at a good clip come noon; Aunty Em and Toto suddenly came to mind when a water spout appeared in the distance.
Hmmm..
Though it dissipated swiftly, I was now more attuned to what had seemed a fair weather day.
When the fourth spout formed closer – though I was running from it, I turned for home.
Enough of that business.
In an hour early with $50 off another day credit plus dinner around the rail? Have to do today.
A fisherman’s life.
Cheers,
Monty
