We had a really nice day in and around Ocean City today with lightish winds, sunny skies and average summer temperatures. The ocean and bay were pretty slick calm so it was a great day to be out there fishing.
Captain Tony Battista of Saltwater Adventures had a great morning for his crew putting them on a couple of keeper flounder, some sea bass and a nice spread of tasty triggerfish.
Anglers fishing on board the Angler with Captain Chris Mizurak enjoyed the nice weather today and the nice fishing. There were plenty of sea bass around the rail and there was a very good flounder bite for some including my buddy Steve Doctor who caught a limit and won the fish pool.
The Miss Kathleen fishing out of Bahia Marina had another good day of fishing wit a mixed bag of sea bass, triggerfish and several nice keeper flounder.
Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star knows where the big sea bass live
Sea Bass on a fabulously calm day – 6/25/26
Ocean pretty as a pond this morning; I held course for an artificial reef site where Gary, Luke, Nick, Adrienne, & Nicholas deployed 10 heavy terracotta pipe pieces to help ensure fishing’s future before heading further east.
First drop – game on. Pretty fish this day. Almost every stop was productive. Saw some seriously nice fish in the mix too.
Paul forever taking care of the reef foundation, ocean took care of him and his..
Worked this time anyway.
Jigmaster Tom emerged from his slump as high hook in double digits while Cindy won the pool & the reef raffle. Happens a few times a year.
Next week there is a meeting for the South Atlantic – SEDAR 108 – with sea bass on the agenda. Below Hatteras they’re not quite as stymied by MRIP rec catch estimates; they know there’s a major problem with sea bass that they just don’t understand. I’m confident my work explains it and offers a repair.
It sure cuts against the grain though. Reducing a size limit for a species in trouble is not in fisheries DNA ..even if it was the size limit that caused the trouble to begin with.
Given a future where it’s all put together –management that boosts spawning & recruitment, plus habitat restoration/creation in grand scale– there is no reason we cannot create the greatest population of sea bass that has ever existed.
That was a LOT of sea bass too. It remains true there were more sea bass caught (almost all by trawl) between 1950 and 1961 than in all the years since combined.
And NOAA tells Congress they’re already 2+X rebuilt?
