It’s nice to have MD tautog season open for this December and even though its tough to nab a keeper close to shore, it does give us the opportunity to sneak out and get on some fish like Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star did today.
Hi Scott – Out on my first dedicated tog trip since April.
Bite wasn’t bad. Lots of
smalls. Have to have acorns before you have oaks.
Only had a handful of clients & just as well; weatherman was playing games again. Wind started to fall out about noon. Up until we still had 25 knots from the N.. Was forecasted NW 10-15..
Thankfully the wind’s been ‘switchy’ — was yesterday too. When 25 knots lays on one compass point it’ll build a wave set rapidly. Here we’ve had it roll from NW to N – no sea heights beyond an occasional 4 footer.
That switching is why a south wind is often more doable than any E or NE blow. A NE wind especially will lock in on a compass point and stay there – gets rough!
Plus E & NE winds have the longest fetch—blowing across open water truly aids sea height development.
No limits of tog today. Most had 2 keepers. Poor Wayne had 14 throwbacks & none for dinner!
John Sadowski of Ocean View, DE won the pool with his 22 incher. Donald Knox of Brooklyn, NY – Shannon Pickens of St Michaels, MD – & Gary Carpenter of Dagsboro, DE are also pictured.
