It was another cold winter day today, but with lightish winds it wasn’t too brutal to be outside. It’s surprising to see so much snow still on the ground in our area and water temperatures are super cold right now too. Looks like it might be one of those winters.
Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star is going to get out on the rip whenever the weather allows so today it was off to the tautog grounds. Fishing wasn’t fire, but he did find some nice fish for his anglers.
Some kind of nice clearing the inlet this morning. Calm as calm could be was scarcely what I had expected.
Ron and Frank deployed a 16 reef block unit plus a pyramid in between Capt Bobby’s Barge and an unnamed (as yet!) tug at Capt. Bob Gowar’s Memorial Reef Group.
Water temp there did not look good for inshore toggin’s near future and especially not today’s prospects. We pressed on.
Wind came on as we got further off. Almost sloppy really.
I hadn’t been to my first stop in nearly a year. Memories aplenty, I envisioned Joe & JoJo having an incredible day while putting nearly all of em back. We sure didn’t see what I thought we’d see this day – a very light bite that I thought might improve; and it did get better, but not by much.
Onward.
Lot of anchoring.
Not much catching.
The bite then went from a tiny bit of life to not so much. The ocean, meanwhile, went from a confused slop to a gorgeous day.
Eased our suffering at least.
Dogfish, even a skate; the pool winner was brought aboard at our last stop. It had been snagged in the tail.
That’s how it goes when they’re just not chewing.
Maybe they’ll bite tomorrow!

Captain Chase Eberle of Chasin’ Tides Charters was out yesterday and had a good day of it putting a boat limit of tautog in the cooler. Kate had the best fish of the day at 10.5 pounds.
