A Trip To Assateague Island
Assateague Island is one of Maryland’s finest beaches for swimming & surf fishing. Multiple options include going to the Assateague State Park, the National Seashore or driving on with your 4×4 vehicle. Both the State Park and National Seashore have lifeguards, bathrooms & snack shacks during the season. The drive to Assateague is beautiful going over the Verrazano Bridge & into Assateague State Park. Ponies are normally all around as you drive through the park. Many times they are in the parking lots & will come up to you at the beach checking for food. Please do not feed the ponies. Assateague State Park advises everyone to stay 40 feet or a “bus length” away from the horses. Remember they are wild ponies & can kick & bite. Also, please drive slowly into and around the park as sometimes they will come into the road. Sadly, there have been a few ponies run over & killed in recent years.
On the way into Assateague Island, make sure to stop into Assateague Market. They have everything you need (or may have forgotten) for a fun beach day, fishing trip or camping adventure… like suntan lotion, bug spray, bait, tackle, camping supplies, snacks, drinks, beer, wine, beach rafts/toys, gift items, hand-dipped ice cream & a deli with hot/cold foods. Assateague Market is the last stop for gas before entering the Park.
