Tuna…Tuna…Tuna Fish

Last weeks weather forecast for the canyons predicted today to have winds in excess of 30 knots and seas in excess of 10 feet…..boy was that wrong….it was beautiful.  Thankfully the forecast updated early enough for the offshore fleet to make plans to head out, and they were rewarded handsomely.

There was word of a bite to the north over the past day or two and most of the fleet from the Ocean City Fishing Center and Sunset Marina headed to the Wilmington Canyon to see what it was all about.  The Boss Hogg with Captain Brian Porter and mates Chris and Buck had an incredible day in the Wilmington.  Late in the day the Boss Hogg was “covered up” with bites that ended up being four bigeye and two yellowfin tuna.  To catch one of these would have been good, but to catch all of them was down right incredible.  It just goes to show you what a good crew and good anglers can do.  The “Hogg” ended the day with five bigeye tuna ranging in length from 56″ to 63″,  eight yellowfin tuna and four mahi.  Awesome stuff!

Captain Jeremy Blunt on the Wrecker fishing out of The Ocean City Fishing Center found his crew a couple of bigeye tuna in the Wilmington Canyon as well.  Wrecker ended the day with two nice bigeye tuna of 125 and 139 pounds and one really nice yellowfin tuna.

Rhonda’s Osprey with Captain Joe Drosey was also in the Wilmington Canyon and had a good day of boxing tuna.  Rhonda’s Osprey ended up with eight nice yellowfin tuna and one false albacore.

I had the pleasure of fishing on the Marli today with Captain Mark Hoos, mate Mark Stephens, owner Mike Bostic and crew for an upcoming episode of Hooked on OC and we had an awesome time.   We caught five keeper yellowfin, a few throwbacks and a couple of false albacore. We lost a really nice bigeye right beside the boat at the leader, which is always a heart breaker, but we got some great footage for a new show.

The inshore party boat fishing was good again today.  The Judith M out of Bahia Marina had good sea bass fishing with a few flounder.  Here is today’s fish pool winner with a nice sea bass.

The report from Wes Pollitt of the Morning Star with Captain Monty Hawkins reported good fishing as well today with a fair pick of sea bass and about 20 keeper flounder.

Bear down at the Oceanic Pier sent in a couple of great pics today.  Brad from Mt. Top, PA caught this small sand tiger shark while surf fishing at 115th street in Ocean City…
