Weeding Through The Shorts

Weeding Through The Shorts

It was a HOT one out there today with temps reaching into the 90s around DelMarVa and it looks like we get more of the same tomorrow.  Tomorrow is day 1 of the Tuna & Tiara’s Ladies only tuna tournament and the weather looks good for some tuna catching.  Good luck to all of the ladies and teams fishing over the next two days!

Captain Chris Mizurak of the Angler reported a decent day of sea bass fishing with some flounder in the mix.  There are lots of fish being caught, it’s just a matter of weeding through the short fish to get a 12.5″ keeper sea bass.

Jesse Harman and his buddy Jack O’Brien had a good night of fishing last night with a nice striped bass that was released and a keeper flounder that went in the box.  The action took place at the Route 50 bridge with Roy Rigs.

Anglers fishing on board the Tortuga out of Bahia Marina have had some good fishing lately with plenty of throwback flounder action with some keepers in the mix.

Captain Marc Spagnola of Dusk to Dawn Bowfishing is burning the candle at both ends again so his shooters can hit their mark both day and night with cow nosed and southern rays.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star reported a fussy sea bass bite today, but his anglers still took home some big knot heads

Sea Bass fussy.. 6/11/26
Ever the expert promotor, owing air show weekend I did open this Sunday (6/14/26) to a regular trip. (As of now only a few spots sold!)
An easy day. Flat calm, fish jumping in the boat..
Ahh, No.
Nope. It wasn’t calm, and no they didn’t.
Fair bit of southerly heave from yesterday’s wind led some clients to sick bay before we even started fishing.
Yelana & Steve sent our terracotta reef unit down to Uncle Murphy’s Reef before heading further off.
Conditions sure seemed ideal. When soon given opportunity, however, sea bass voted Nay on cooperation.
What a fussy bite. Sometimes I marked them even 35 feet thick and, looking around the rail, not a soul would be bowed up.
By and by we figured out what they would eat and on what rig, fished in what style.
Failing that? Crickets.
Done proper? Box some up.
Thank goodness both bait and rigs were readily available aboard.
Holly, unwilling to tolerate any possibility of a Hurricane Murray pool victory, boxed the biggest cbass.
A few ling were caught too. They’re tasty – not pretty. Unwanted by some & thank goodness; I know what Shelly and I will have for dinner. They’re wonderful fried.
A guy fishing the stern hit double digits first with Scott and Chris following.
Even with DD catches aboard? Some anglers were disinclined to discuss their keepers. (You know, Hurricane can be quiet like that.)
And, well, I guess so. It truly was an extremely fussy bite.
See what tomorrow brings.
Cheers,
Monty
