It was rough today….no two ways about it. First thing this morning NOAA Buoy 44009 was reporting wind speeds around 13 knots and sea conditions of a little over 3 feet about every 5 seconds. Those are definitely not ideal conditions, especially with the forecast, but as close as the tuna have been a couple of boats decided to give it a shot. And when you have a 58′ Custom Carolina….you can handle it!
Captain Mark Hoos on board the Marli out of Sunset Marina has one such boat. The Marli is a well built 58′ Carolina with an experienced crew that does well tuna fishing…..and today was no exception. Captain Mark and Mate Mark Stephens put their crew on six Yellowfin tuna, including three 40+ pounders, four Dolphin and one lucky angler’s first White Marlin release.
Captain Mark and Mate Mark did say that conditions, though manageable for fishing, did deteriorate as the afternoon progressed. When I asked Captain Hoos how rough it really was he replied, “Well, we didn’t take any over the bow.” And after speaking with the charter I could tell that they had an awesome time!
I Facebook posted today that the Daily Angle may be my tuna salad recipe because I was sure that no one was fishing with the way the wind was blowing. Well thankfully the Marli proved me wrong on that….but my tuna salad is good, and I don’t like to tease, so here it is anyway…..
Ingredients:
1 8-12 oz FRESH grilled tuna steak
2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
1 celery stalk diced
1/4 cup white onion diced
@4 tablespoons Duke’s mayonaise (depending how wet you like it)
1/2 teaspoon of celery seed
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Directions:
1. Mix all ingredients
2. Put on a Ritz cracker or bread
3. Eat it
If you choose, you can skip the Ritz cracker and the bread, it’s that good!
