Day two of the White Marlin Open is in the books now and it was a really slow day at the docks. There were only a handful of boats that fished today and the scale action showed it. It was really rough offshore today….like REALLY ROUGH! The only boat that hit the scale today was the Ahi. I spoke to the captain and he told me that the weather was as bad as it seemed and they took several 12 footers over the bow. They bent a wheel yesterday that forced them to give it a try today under extreme conditions. The Ahi set out this morning and dropped their spread in at 8:30 about 40 miles offshore. They proceeded to troll out to the Baltimore Canyon and then just turned around and trolled back until the 3:30 PM lines out call. They did have three white marlin in the spread and did catch one dolphin. The dolphin was big enough to bring it to the scales at Harbor Island to try and take a piece of the daily meat fish calcutta. If Ahi’s fish reaches the 20 pound minimum for dolphin, then they are looking at a payout of around $12,000 for their efforts. It was heartbreaking for me when the scale read 19.5 pounds! That’s how tournament fishing goes and the crew of the Ahi knows that so they’ll put forth a great effort on their next two days and see how things unfold.
Here is how things look on the leaderboard after two days of fishing.
