This morning and evening were absolutely beautiful in Ocean City. The wind was light, it wasn’t too terribly hot and it was bright and sunny. However, the middle of the day was nasty. We had one doozie of a thunderstorm roll through that had some pretty strong winds, some heavy rain and some wicked lightning, and there was a tornado warning for our area for about 45 minutes of it. The storm lasted about an hour or so and then it was gone. Paul Rayburn of JPR Rods and Captain Jeff Coats were on the water at the time and took some crazy cool shots of the thunderhead as the storm approached.
Aside from the weather, the fishing story of the day was the awesome flounder fishing that continues to impress anglers. The flounder fishing was once again excellent in the ocean on the wrecks and reefs, and in the bays behind Ocean City.
Captain Dean Lo from the party boat Angler reported some good fishing for flounder and sea bass today. Angler caught several sea bass including some fish over 2 pounds, some mahi up to 9 pounds and a few flounder including a really nice 4 pounder.
Worcester County Commissioner Bud Church was on board the Angler today and caught himself a nice 3 pound fish.
Paul Reyburn of JPR Custom Rods was in the ocean in search of flounder as well today. Paul and Eric Standon found some nice keeper fish all caught on JPR Rods.
Ayrton Pryor and his buddies Jacob Lewis and Gavin Carmody found some nice keeper flounder in the thorofare. The boys ended up with four nice keeper fish and released another 30 on jig heads and white Gulp.
I had a chance to take the family out this afternoon and try our luck at our favorite type of fishing. We fished the south bay with live minnows and white Gulp swimming mullet and had 13 throwbacks and two keepers. We had seven throwbacks and a keeper in our first drift. My 9-year-old son Ryan was top angler and showed Mom and Dad what’s up. One of our throwbacks had a good size bite taken out of him from a larger predator, but was able to live to see another day.
The flounder action at the Oceanic Pier was good this morning on the outgoing tide. Bear sent me a few photos of Camron from Hanover, PA with a 16″ and 17 1/2″ keeper fish. Bear also submitted a photo of Todd from NC who caught himself a 17 1/2″ keeper with the pier’s huge minnows.
My partner in crime with Hooked on OC Dave Messick took a trip on the Bay Bee and had a great time with his son Dorian and the anglers on board. Dave got some great shots of the action that the Bay Bee has been having with the flounder lately.
Dave made a video of the Bay Bee out of the Ocean City Fishing Center that you can check out here….
The chunking report from Massey’s Canyon wasn’t great today, but there were some fish caught. Captain Jeremy Blunt from the Wrecker out of The Ocean City Fishing Center had a good day with his crew from Albany, NY. The crew landed five nice yellowfins and beat the storms back to the dock.
The Spring Mix II with Captain Chris Watkowski and mate Marshall Freng found their crew some tuna as well today. Spring Mix II went three fish out of five bites chunking Massey’s Canyon.
