95 Pound Yellowfin Currently Worth $1.8 Million Lands on Day 2 of the 2025 White Marlin Open

I had an awesome morning on the golf course with White Marlin Open emcee Andy Motsko this morning, and got some exciting news on about the 10th hole.  Andy won today’s match so he’s got bragging rights for the year and this acknowledgment is me paying my debt.  Congratulations buddy, I look forward to next time as always!  I got the exciting news from my buddy Captain Tucker “God’s Gift to Fishing” Colqohoun of the Special Situation with a simple text that read, “Boated wm, I’ll be at the scale at 4.”  Tucker and the crew did show up at the WMO scale at 4, but their 72″ white marlin just missed the 70 pound qualifying weight at 67 pounds.  It was a disappointing start to the day, but some nice tuna and mahi showed up after making it an exciting second day at the scales.  Here’s who’s leading after two days of fishing.  Many thanks to White Marlin Open for the pics!

Away from the tournament, Captain Dale Lisi of the Foolish Pleasures showed his angels a good time with a white marlin release, some mahi, some tilefish and some sea bass up to 5 pounds.

Anglers fishing on Chasin’ Tides with Captain Chase Eberle had two good trips with a limit of sea bass this morning and another 64 on the second trip.

Anlgers fishing on board Miss Kathleen had good fishing this morning with triggerfish, flounder and sea bass coming on board.

Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break had a couple of good trips today with croakers and flounder from the OC Inlet.

Justin, 14 and Kyle, 11 from Bellefonte, PA caught their first ever flounder fishing with Captain Tony Battista of Saltwater Adventures.

Randy Mentzer of Mentzer Custom Trailers had a nice day at the route 50 bridge with three keeper flounder.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star found some mahi for his anglers on today’s trip to the rip.

The last of the first half of this storm’s swell greeted us at the inlet. Sure wasn’t much left. Right nice actually. Clear clean water, blown inshore by easterlies, was showing in the prop wash time we were 5 miles off. Paddled a fair while before Max & Rylan deployed 20 reef blocks and a pyramid at the “forgotten block drop.”
..and from there?
Further east of course.
Worked a bunch of spots in clean green, 77.5 degree water with no success.
Then paddled NE a while. There? Same temp – closer to blue water & Life! We dropped two mahi and boated one. Kept beating the bushes hoping for a school but only landed three more.
Was looking like we’d lose some more days to weather when I cooked my port vulcan coupling – a huge part that transfers engine power to the marine gear.
Ahhh, the wrenching life.
Could work all night and giterdone, but with a forecast of E15 gusts 20?
Great Scott!!
Mercy!!
Tomorrow will be soon enough.
Maybe we’ll have blue marlin sightings at the Bass Grounds after this bout of wind.
Not kidding.
Some mahi way inshore almost certainly. Saw some big mahi – nice fish – circa 1998ish at Little Gull/Kelly’s Reef. Saw a blue marlin there too. But that was in Sept 1981. It jumped & jumped until I couldn’t see it anymore. Capt Orie Bunting said it was probably a blue..
Closest blue marlin last year was 13.5 miles SE. Once upon a time the third lump (15 miles ESE) was the blue marlin spot.
Water was sure nice inshore – going to get nicer. Could get interesting!
Cheers!
Monty
