Big Tunas Steal Big Money On Day 3 of the 2024 White Marlin Open

Big Tunas Steal Big Money On Day 3 of the 2024 White Marlin Open

I just got back from a pretty busy day of scales action for day 3 of the 51st Annual White Marlin Open where some big tunas snuck on the leaderboard and snuck a couple of hundred thousand dollars out of some other anglers pockets.  There are new 2nd and 3rd place tunas on the board that are currently worth a pretty penny, but we’ll see if they last through Saturday or if someone comes along and does the same thing to them.  Here’s who leads the White Marlin Open after 3 days of fishing.

White Marlin

1st Place      Waste Knot     77.5 Lbs   $4, 182,198

Blue Marlin

1st Place     Stone Cutter     897.5 Lbs      $555,093

2nd Place     Bobojo     789.5 Lbs       $481,087

Tuna

1st Place     Blue Runner     220.5 Lbs      $1,038,365

2nd Place    Warden Pass     193.5 Lbs     $209,809

3rd Place    The Right Place     $113,633

Mahi

1st Place     Catch 23     32.5 Lbs        $124,495.00

2nd Place     Double Nickel     31 Lbs     $3,125

Away from the tournament Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break Charters had a nice day for his folks putting them on a keeper flounder and some bluefish action.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star is canceling tomorrow, but he had some nice fish caught today.

Update!
Devil.. Weatherman upped tomorrow’s easterly breeze. While the boys are chasing a cut of 8 mil in the White Marlin Open, my goal is to not break bones.. (Right Duane?!?)
I am canceling tomorrow – 8/8/24..
Rats!!!
And now back to the 8/7/24 report.
..by afternoon a glassy calm sea. Calm before the storm? Would seem so.
We cleared the marina into yet another fog. Lookouts, radars, horn signals; had yet to navigate Shantytown Channel and were fairly well fogged in. What on earth.. Summer of 24 certainly has had its challenges. ‘Unlucky at fishing, lucky at love’ the old saying goes. Must be a lot of flowers being sold in the Mid-Atlantic..
Still, unseen beneath the fog lay among the calmest seas we’ve had in some while. Though not sunny, when visibility improved a beautiful day unfolded.
Justin & Jack sent two reef pyramids down to Lucas Alexander’s Reef. We continued east.
The sea bass bite began alright, even saw possible pool contenders right out of the gate. Joe would catch his winning fish mid-morning though.
After several days of screaming current and 16 ounce sinkers it was nice to go back to 8 ounces to hold bottom. My anglers today even had to endure a serious slump as the current swung north – a quite normal lull in the action during any trip.
Though Thursday looks plenty good, Cancelations appear a near certainty as Hurricane Murray’s sister, Debby approaches. Will advise clients by text and calls.
Doesn’t look to hang around long though and certainly in a weakened state as it passes.
We’ll double her lines anyway..
Cheers
Monty
Captain Chris Mizurak of the Angler is going to have a couple of days off the ocean with the upcoming winds.  Today it was very nice and he had some good fishing for most.
