It was a pretty volatile weather day today with some pretty torrential rains followed by some pretty beautiful sunshine. There were more boats on the water as we get closer to the weekend and there was some pretty good catching going on. This weekend’s tournament is the Ocean City Marlin Club’s Heels & Reels where the ladies show us guys how it’s done.
17 of 35 boats fished today and there were several billfish caught and released including white and blue marlin and spearfish. There were also tuna and mahi that hit the scale at Atlantic Tackle. Here’s what the leaderboard looks like after the first day.
Outside of the tournament there was a good bite on bluefin tuna for the crew of Rhonda’s Osprey with Captain Joe Drosey. Captain Joe put his guys on a limit of nice bluefin while chunking.
Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star said that the ocean made them earn their dinner today, but they did pull some nice flounder over the rail. Ronnie Smith of Morgantown, WV, Mike Zigler of Ocean City, MD and Sandra Gebhardt of Annapolis, MD are pictured below with some of the flatties. Mike won the fish pool with a nice 23.75″ fish.
Captain John Prather of Ocean City Guide Service sent me a photo of a fish that we don’t see very often in Ocean City today. One of his anglers used a squid and fishbites combo to land this good sized pompano in the south bay.
Russ Silinski from Linesville, PA won the fish pool on the Tortuga today with Captain Drew Zerbe and mates Serge Gardner and Matt Harris. The 17 1/2″er ate a shiner and squid combo in the east channel.
Captain Marc Spagnola of Dusk to Dawn Bowfishing was all over the rays today in windy conditions. Captain Marc found some clean water and some good shooting and put his crew on some cow nosed and southern ray action.
