If you could dial up a perfect fall day I’m pretty sure it would look a lot like today did. It was another beautiful day with a nice cool start, sunny skies and light winds that warmed into a very comfortable day to be outside. The weather forecast is for more of the same for the next few days so get out and enjoy it….it’s not going to last forever.
As the nighttime temperatures fall into the 40s it really gives the inshore waters a chance to start cooling down and as flounder stage to head out of the back bays, fish like tautog, bluefish and rockfish are moving into the bay in better numbers. We are starting to see more keeper tautog being caught in the bays lately too. Captain Jeff Coats of Pitboss Fishing was out for Karen’s day off again today and had a great day of fishing at the south jetty. Captain Jeff and Karen went through an entire quart of sand fleas catching 13″ to 15″ tog on about every drop. They also caught one keeper tog at 17 1/2″, some short stripers and a small sheepshead that was released…..then it was off to Harborside for all you can eat ribs and shrimp!!
My buddy Steve Tapley said the tog fishing was “on fire” this morning at Martha’s Landing. Steve and crew caught several throwback tog, one keeper tog and one keeper flounder.
Flounder fishing is still really good right now in clean water conditions north of the bridge. The Bay Bee with Captain Cale Layton had this keeper fish and over 60 throwbacks on this morning’s trip.
Captain Brad McCabe of Bay Time Charters and son Finn had an awesome evening on the water today. Finn started at Stinky Beach catching and releasing 20 or so tog and then joined Captain Brad on the water. Finn got to watch Captain Brad sort through about 20 throwback flounder before finnally catching a 17″ keeper for dinner.
There are some more rockfish showing up in the bay around the inlet and bridges as the water temperatures cool down. Jason Mueller of the Ocean City Fishing Community is out on the bay all the time and he’s been finding some nice throwback rock recently.
