According to the USGS (U.S. Geological Society) there was a magnitude 4.7 earthquake approximately 136 miles southeast of Ocean City at around 6:30 this evening. As far as I know there have not been any eyewitness reports yet and the USGS reports that there is no danger of a tsunami or any tsunami activity at this time.
You can see from the “Latest Earthquakes” map on the USGS website that there are small earthquakes all the time on our planet, but usually not so close to Ocean City.

I was in Ocean City at the time of the earthquake and have gotten several texts from people out of the area asking if I felt anything and I truly did not. Like most, I wouldn’t have known anything had happened if it weren’t for good ole’ Facebook.
Even though the epicenter of the quake took place well beyond our offshore canyons, this is still pretty big news for Ocean City fishing. I’ll update if any other significant news comes out of this event.
Here is a link to the information from USGS specific to the earthquake.
