Sea Bass, Flounder, More Scup and Some Nice Swords

We’re at the beginning stretch of some really beautiful weather for this week with sunny skies, light winds and very nice fall temperatures.  Get out there and enjoy it and do some fishing……I’ll be in Jamaica!!!

Captain Willie Zimmerman and the crew of the RoShamBo was out in the deep today where they caught two very swordfish and some late season mahi.

Captain Chris Mizurak of the Angler reported having to weed through the shorts, but some folks managed a nice day with some sea bass and some very nice porgy.

Big Bird Cropper fished the OC Inlet and Route 50 bridge with Roy Rigs and caught and released five rockfish on the day.

The Miss Ocean City found three keeper flounder on yesterday’s trip to the East Channel.

Anglers fishing with Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star got to help out with some research and catch some limits of sea bass along the way.

Greeting All,
Left with precious few souls aboard today. Gorgeous forecast – sea floor curiosity – why not.
Bert and Greg did the deed on today’s block drop. Left em on one of the spots where I am working around a center mound with more distant four-block units. I’ve seen even a single block hold fish – we shall see what happens.
Fishing was finest kind. Jerry boxed out first – Big Jon next – Greg had 1st, 2nd & 3rd for the pool (only first pays but he had it nailed down.) Big Jon was high hook on scup with ten nice fish – nice for us at least.
Scup/porgy used to be a huge part of OC MD’s spring recreational fishing. I’m told it was hot until 1969 then carried into the early 70s before going kaput. Some forty sports would tie up stem to stern on Fenwick Shoal with only a few boats actually anchored. Just outside the shoal trawler skippers call it “Beer Can Slough” – even into the 1990s they were catching beer cans tossed over while scup fishing.
Trying to sort out what’s going on with sea whip. We lowered the stalk (go pro cameras with lights) and looked for sea whip. A bit deeper today, just a bit; there was none to be found.
Will keep looking..
Surprisingly the bottom I was fishing appeared manmade at first. Something that rolled off a barge I thought. But then more random angles appeared – “slab rock” I think. Sandstone breaks mighty clean sometimes. Makes a lot of our natural bottom in +-20 fathoms.
Had a brief glimpse of a shark too. Sand tiger? Had two cameras fail. Not sure which ones either!
Ugh..
Learning.
Cheers,
Monty
