Nice Flounder On The Wrecks and Some Mahi in The Canyons

Nice Flounder On The Wrecks and Some Mahi in The Canyons

It was another beautiful October day today with sunny skies, light winds and unseasonably warm temperatures.  There was a pretty good bottom fishing bite on ocean structure and Captain Dale of Foolish Pleasures found there are still some mahi in the deep.

Captain Dale Lisi and his crew on Foolish Pleasures had a good day in the Washington Canyon today putting a bunch of tilefish and mahi on the dock at Bahia Marina.

Anglers fishing on the Angler with Captain Chris Mizurak had a decent day of fishing today.  The bite wasn’t hot and heavy, but most did well with the sea bass and there were a few nice flounder put in the net.

Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star put clients on some nice sea bass on today’s trip.

Not a breath of air was shown in unfallen autumn leaves, nor in any inshore flag. Was a bit of NNW air moving at the dock though.
Maybe more than a bit..
With that apprehension foremost in some minds, we tied her loose. I didn’t honestly know if we had a day coming or not. Found the ocean plenty saucy – winds would gust near 20, then fall out to 12ish. Sure looked like a trap; the exact kind of NW wind that lures you offshore — and then forecasted winds become doubled or more.
Didn’t Happen.
Forecasts were spot on. Wind was supposed to fall out and did.
Even came nice later.
Big Jon tried to reload his reef karma with another block drop. Great shot–a perfect deployment; but, I fear, a major misfire in the luck aspect..
(Made it up in bird captures?)
With so few clients aboard I had hope of quick limits.
Ol’man Murphy, that jelly-side down guy; he must’ve about died laughing. Quick Limits? With sea bass not holding to structure?
..there was nothing easy about this day’s fishing. Fish were moving all around. Worked hard for Kelvin to limit and get most others into double digits. Philip was one shy that DD mark, but with the pool fish in his cooler? He didn’t seem to mind at all..
The fellow who, by this boat’s tradition, should have had an abundance of luck?
Oh dear..
Moving right along(!) I have a lot of room tomorrow in a dicey forecast. Dern sure won’t be a ‘wander way offshore’ sort of day.
Get on some sea bass? I think so!
We picked up four hitchhikers from offshore today. Most we ever caught was 5.
NW wind pushes these little fellow off the coast too far – Darwinian selection foiled for a very few.. (I’ll let the birders sort these little fellows out for you all!)
Spliced up 1,800 ft of three strand for the port anchor yesterday too..
Cheers!Monty

Brian Reynolds had a nice evening of fishing with stripers, weakfish, red drum and some tautog including one strange orange tinted fellow.
Anthony Sousa from On the Run charters with Captain Dave was cleaning fish at Bahia Marina this evening when the rockfish started blowing up in the lights.  His daughter Gemma Sousa promptly grabbed one of On the Run’s Deadly Tackle spinning rods and caught this nice 30.5″ slot fish that ended up on the cleaning table too.

Still a few flounder out there in the bay….Check it out!!
