The wind started blowing NE today and it’s going to blow much harder over the next several days. I know the party boats are already planning on being off until at least mid-next week and I’m not sure how many offshore boats will get out either. It’s good there was some decent fishing today.
I had the opportunity to head over to the Chesapeake Bay today with my good buddy C.L. Marshall of Tangier Sound Charters for a new episode of Hooked on OC and we had an absolutely epic day. John Wittmyer of Crabs to Go joined us and it was a ton of fun. We caught speckled trout, bluefish, puppy drum and I was able to catch my personal best bull red of 51″. I caught my specks and reds on the Deadly Tackle Thing a Ma Jig and I used our Fish Finder rig to land the big red. It was an awesome day on the bay with some really great company!
Captain Mike Burt and the crew of the Pumpin’ Hard had Sammy put them on a nice pile of mahi today.
Captain Dave Caffrey of On the Run had a nice day for his anglers with six keeper flounder and a nice trout.
Mike Brockmeyer & Stan Tzsyco fished the East Channel today where they caught two keeper flounder of 17.5″ and 25.5″ on live bait.
Anglers fishing on the Angler with Captain Chris Mizurak had better fishing today with lots of nice sea bass going in the cooler.
Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star put his anglers on some decent sea bass fishing on his last trip until at least next Tuesday.
A light NE wind (with a swiftly deteriorating forecast in coming days) made itself seen in flags this AM. A good number of regulars graced my rail – and w/o our multi-pie bearing Prince of Portliness? What could go wrong? Sure seemed we had a fighting chance at a good day.
Despite a crisp sunrise in dry clear air, my fortunes were soon reversed when my port turbo let go. Maneuvered fine – no higher ROMs though.
Dogone summer of ’24 swipes another $5K.. (6?)
I sure hope the expression ‘Unlucky at fishing, lucky at love’ kicks in. Dang sure hasn’t been my year for fishing.
If unlucky at fishing you couldn’t tell it by clients’ coolers today though. Having lost my turbo I offered a half-price sea bass trip absent mahi effort.
We don’t call him Sea Bass Bob for nothing, he had a rare 2024 limit and went into ‘plus’ territory. About half my clients were in double digits – all just kicking around on tiny inshore pieces..
I think sea bass know when a blow is coming – puts em in a feeding mood.
Sure bit a good part of the day. By day’s end, however, I was over the densest school all day – we caught three!
Too close to call; Frank & Dave had to split the pool.
Left early.
Got in late.
Half off.
Very good sea bassin..
Well OK then.
That Works.
I’ve cancelled through Tuesday for NE winds. Looks like a real, ‘Double her lines, Boys!’ sort of blow coming..
We shall.
And get a new turbo on the port engine!
No balloons today, but the boys may have saved someone’s fancy props when they fished a hefty 4×4 out of the water. . .
We’ll have time to make a repair, detail the engine room, do a bit of carpentry, organize storage – that kind of weather coming.
Cheers All,
Monty
