Sea Bass, Flounder and Keeper Back Bay Tautog

Sea Bass, Flounder and Keeper Back Bay Tautog

Halloween looks a little blowy tomorrow, but today was a nice day to be out on the water bending a rod.

Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break Charters had a nice day in the Ocean City Inlet catching and releasing some flounder and boxing some keeper tautog up to 17”.

Jeff Weeks and Dave Weller fished outside the Bass Grounds today and caught a limit of sea bass with some keeper tautog and triggerfish as well.

Captain Chris Mizurak of the Angler reported a picky Seabass bite today, but they did end up with some nice fish for the box and a couple of blue line tilefish.

.Caprain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star saw some good sea bass fishing for some of his anglers along with some more scup.

Sea Bassing on a fine day 10/30/26

Plus! Canceling Saturday’s long trip and switching to Sunday for its 5 to 10 knot winds. I’ve never had anyone catch a limit of scup -30!- Gonna reach for that brass ring Sunday along with sea bass as usual. You in? Booking info below..

Ocean calm as could be clearing the inlet; wasn’t long when the sun broke into a cloudless sky. A good steam off found us in what amounts to a fishing ‘fleet’ out of OCMD – there were 5 boats fishing the reef. We dropped blocks on one of my first projects (re-restoring a restoration!) and soon began fishing ourselves – catching even.
Shelly started hot with two fine keepers – it would be a while before the next. At 20 inches, the biggest sea bass of the day was swung aboard at our first stop also. To everyone else’s relief, that angler, Smilin Ray, hadn’t played the pool.
Nicking and picking – good shots of fish and then a slow bite alternated most of the day.
Though I’d told Steve it was impolite to pull a keeper before the lady next to him had, he crossed into double digits at 11:40 anyway. This was long before anyone else and left Shelly far behind. No simple ‘elbows on the table’ infraction; Steve’s not normally given to such ill-mannered behavior. In hindsight I believe it was likely retribution for the last time they’d fished together. I should imagine that scar ran deep.
George hit double digits too at 1:15 – then, dare I write it? Our very own Portly Prince of Pastry Delights, Hurricane Murray his dern self joined the double digit crowd soon after. Rod in one hand, slice of apple pie in the other – sea bass just aren’t safe anymore.
With three of my 11 anglers in DDs, the bite slowed and I couldn’t get anyone across the line. Three at 13 with Terry taking the pool will have to do today.
In way of consolation, the ocean all but glassed out on the way home – slick calm made a very nice ride indeed.
Cheers,
Monty

If you’d like to join me in my attempt to have someone box a limit of scup on Sunday, call Marisa at 443-235-5577. Advertising 6:30 to 3:30 – likely leave about 6 and get back about 5? $175 fare..
See Fish Report at morningstarfishing.com if unfamiliar with my rig.
For one thing I have zero tolerance for short or over limit fish!
Cheers!
